Last time a squadron of ships sailed together apart from the Dartmouth Training Squadron in the 1960's

I cannot remember a squadron of ships sailing together since the above in 1964 although in 1965 I was on HMS Tilford a seaward defence boat in singapore during the confrontation and after it finished we all sailed up to Bangkok, but with only 4 ships in the squadron that hardly counted as one, the four were Tilford , Camberford, Ickford, Greatford

Did a deployment in the Med in 1975 when I was on the Bulwark. Us, Hermes, Glamorgan and Ashanti went up the Dardanelles for a rig run in Istanbul..does that count :)

I think though their used to about 8 ships all in the same squadron, with all the operational ships going around as one

@ChrisAsh it might be worth putting the question onto this site mate. For those that haven't seen it yet there are some good photo's of ships both RN and RFA being put up/

HANSARD 1803–2005 1970s 1977 April 1977 22 April 1977 Written Answers (Commons) DEFENCE HMS "Danae"
HC Deb 22 April 1977 vol 930 cc167-8W 167W

§ Mr. Woodall
asked the Secretary of State for Defence if he will make a statement about the incident in Rio de Janeiro involving HMS "Danae" and Mr. Ronald Biggs.
§ Mr. Duffy
In company with other ships of a task group, the frigate HMS "Danae" was in Rio de Janeiro from 14th to 18th April on a good-will visit. As is customary on such visits, the ship's168W company were encouraged to meet the local community and to invite guests on board. Any entertainment would be at the host's own expense. Personnel are advised and expected to show discretion in offering hospitality. I understand that some junior ratings from HMS "Danae" received an invitation to dinner from Mr. Biggs whom they had met ashore, and responded by inviting him on board while they stowed their shopping. When the officers in charge had identified the ratings' guest as Mr. Biggs he was asked to leave the ship. He was on board for only about 25 minutes and no attempt was made to detain him. There were no powers under which Mr. Biggs could have been arrested. Mr. Biggs will not be allowed back on board any of Her Majesty's ships when some ships of the group return to Rio de Janeiro on 23rd April.

Yes and no, what I mean is all the ships wearing the same logo on the funnel normally on the frigates and destroyers, and the old minesweepers On deployment of exercises it was mainly a selection of ships from different squadrons working together

Larger ships like the 60's county class or cruisers seems to just be flag ships with no squadron

Yes - Portland squadron was the 2nd Squadron (our 2 was red if I remember rightly)

Task Force 317.4 was 8th Frigate Squadron with a County (were they in Destroyer Squadrons) as leader - we were all (I think) 2nd Flotilla
