Welcome to the Navy Net aka Rum Ration

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial RN website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. One of my sons sent me a “Kindle” reading gadget that's all the rage. He thought it would be ideal for me in Hospital but I'm buggered if I can work it out.
It says you need a wireless WiFi or whatever that is or 3G to use it.
I really have no idea what WiFi is or really want to know but I do use a 3g dongle[is that a sort of sex toy I haven't met yet] to connect to the net rather than commit to a Broadband package being a light user, and I may be in the chop shop for a while so I need to get it sorted.
Has anyone got one?can I use it in hospital to read books, can I download RN porn? And RR?
The manual is about four pages and meant for people with more brain cells than I have.
It cost £152 so I'd hate to see my lad ripped off because I'm too thick to use it.
I could use some help if you can.Cheers
  2. You have to download 'books' from Amazon, you might be able to connect it physically to your computer using a cably thingy. The wifi and the dongle are like invisible cables to the internet.

I have a Sony e-book (without wifi) and I love it, the books are expensive but for me it is most convenient and light to hold.
  3. You need to be in the vicinity of a WIFI or 3G zone. Don't know if they have them in hospitals. If you want to download (buy) a book you will need to go on-line - via WIFI - purchase the book, and then read it to your hearts content as it is now yours. You can use it for other purposes such as RR and other social networking sites but it is not the ideal piece of kit for this. There is another topic in "bloody computers" on RR about kindles. Have a look at it as well as visiting

I've got a Kindle and am delighted with it. Happy reading (eventually)

You should be able to do all that you have spoken about. Just switch on and go to the Menu button and switch on 'Wireless'. There will also be a user manual which can help you. To download books you need to set up an account with Amazon. Once that is done then you can download books to your heart's content (and the depth of your wallet). There is a lot of free stuff on there which may interest you.

You can also get RR by going to 'Experimental' in the Menu setting. This will give you access to tinterweb and some other techy stuff like MP3 and text-to-speech.

If you are going to be in hospital for a while, use the time to get used to the Kindle, which IMO is a great piece of kit, especially in your situation. I am afraid that you are a bit late for the £1 books, but Amazon are running a special offer with lots of books at less that £1. Dig around and pick up what you like.

Hope you are not in dock for too long.
  5. This is all assuming SF has wifi!

SF how do you connect to the internet at home? Perhaps you have wifi and you do not know it! My family didn't know that they had!!

If he has the top model that should not be a problem - from the Kindle website::

Kindle works in the same way as a mobile phone and to date I have had not issues with it.

  7. thanks for the replies,I still don't understand what Wi-Fi is,I used to have a dial up connection, then went 3G dongle connection to get a faster connection,A tenner a month dongle does me well enough,if I'm in hospital I don't need to pay for Broadband so it works.
Just as an experiment I tried to download a Book,Stig Something or other, and it downloaded for a couple of quid but I can't get past the first page!
It will be a long haul but I'm sure with the help of the clever people such as yourselves,I'll get there. Thanks again.
  8. SeaFodder'39,

Aside from the Kindle, take it easy and get well soon. If you don't get to post here yourself make sure your lad (?) keeps us up to date again, pse.
