What @WreckerL said, Plus the AFCO have given her an heads up, the running and swimming are only a minor part of what is required to succeed, but if you are under par, they will dominate her time in basic training, when she should be concentrating on other things, which leads to more things slipping. so get her out training, improving her running will increase her overall fitness, which in turn will help the swimming.
Wish her good luck, only her own hard work will help her.

Thanks Guys...
She seems a bit more up-beat now. We plan on increasing her running, but the swimming is dependant on when the Pools re-open. Fingers crossed it's on schedule for beginning of July.

Hi All.

My daughter is going through the recruitment process, but has had a knock back, and is (understandably) feeling down because of it.
She has just had her interview, but has been told that her swimming isn't good enough as she hasn't been in the pool for a couple of years - even though she was raised in Cyprus, been swimming since she was 2 without armbands, and has been scuba diving several times.
Plus her running needs to improve. She currently does the BFT in just over 16 mins, but needs to get it down to the required 14.29 mins.
They told her everything else is fine, but she needs to improve on these 2 points and then contact them again in about a month.

I was just wondering if anyone else has had a knock-back like this, and then went on to join.
I have told her that this is ok, and it's something to work on - but could do with 'showing' her that others have done this too, if that makes sense?

Cheers
Mick
Certainly others have, though I can't on here give you personal examples. One of the reasons for the PRNC being introduced was exactly because too many were turning up unprepared or simply not ready.

Ultimately it is better that she makes these improvements now rather than at Raleigh. As Sumo says; having the worry of passing the RNFT or NST while she should be concentrating on other things will be detrimental to her overall performance and increase the risk of being held back (or in the worst case discharged).

What she has is a way ahead; she knows where she needs to improve and has a goal. The swimming comment is a bit disingenuous I think. I rarely swim, and when I do go in a pool it's usually to play with my grandchildren (so hasn't happened in a while), but I can still swim and could still pass the NST. Not that I have to, you only have to do that once. Can she even get in a pool at the moment?

Nobody likes a knock-back, stating the obvious somewhat, but if she approaches it in the right way she can turn this into a positive. If she can focus and bring that run time down she will have shown herself that she can get past barriers and achieve her goals. She will also go into Raleigh feeling more confident about the physical aspects of the training, which is something not enough do. Some stress is a good thing, too much really isn't. I also believe it to be true that worry that is unrelated to the task in hand can and will still have a negative impact. If they were to process her application now and she found herself at Raleigh shortly, she'd go into it worrying about the phys - and that will play out in how she performs in other crucial areas. She smashes this, not only doesn't she have that additional worry but she may find the PT sessions as something to look forward to; something she can smash no worries, a chance to (almost) relax for 90 mins.

They have probably done her a favour, although it might not seem like that right now. Too many people turn up at Raleigh unprepared for the physical rigours and demands of training. In these cases it dominates their inability to cope with everything else. Whilst she may be fit and capable, perhaps she didn't explain in enough detail to convince the recruiter that she was at an acceptable standard. Depending on her age she will need to complete the RNFT in week 5 of training in 13:10 if she is under 25 years old.

It isn’t really a knock back , getting in the swimming pool and getting your running fitness up isn’t that difficult

***Beware old squaddie moaning post(ish)***

So the new recruitment process all online, son received email PRNC cancelled, may affect your start date, two weeks later another email we look forward too seeing you on your PRNC?, no call from the AFCO, have used the IM tool on Navy portal, and tried to ring AFCO but no response from either. Obviously we are in unexplored territory with the COVID pandemic but i find the recruitment process a bit detached and appears to be slower than "in the old days"

My boy applied in early April and is on stop as far as we can see. We assume the first step is the Recruiting Test but these are clearly not happening at the moment. He won't get his GCSE results until late August so I wonder if the AFCO will have opened up by then. He is running every other day so he is getting quite fit.

Where do AFCOs stand in all this? Are they likely to open soon does anyone know? Looking at the practical side of it could they open for appointments only? Staff sit behind screens, limit the number of appointments etc.

Pete.

Hello, My son received a joining date of 13 July and his PRNC was supposed to be in June but was canceled due to Covid. He has not had much follow up from his recruiter and we are five weeks away and he has not received a kit list or any travel arrangements, is this normal?

there is no answer from the local AFCO when we call and his emails are not being answered.

Nope.
That's for already serving types only - and there is a minimum age of 45? Maybe 50? - unless on some form of medical downgrade where walking is allowed, but running not.
Min age is 40. I get mine next year, although heard it’s nails to pass if you’re fit. I’ll stick to small level Bleep Test.

I was 'chatting' the other day to a parent whose son's AFCO is the one in Ipswich and she said that they were responding and that her son had been able to speak to them and also arrange a Zoom type meeting with them.

The number for Ipswich is 01473 254450.

Give that number a try - let me know what happens.

If you have no luck with them, I'll give you another number.

The "problem" with the rockport walk is you can't bluff a HR monitor, nor can you grit your teeth and just get your heart rate down (easily).

It's a pretty true test of your VO2Max.

Sorry if this is a dull question: So I am told son has to self isolate for 14 days prior to going to Raleigh. How does he then get to Raleigh, if he uses any form of public transport/airport there would have been no point in self isolating
