Joining the Navy at 16, What Job?

Discussion in 'Joining Up - Royal Navy Recruiting' started by DanCharles99, Feb 3, 2015.

Welcome to the Navy Net aka Rum Ration

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial RN website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. Hi, I am currently 15 and I'm planning to join the RN a few months after my 16th. I have no qualifications (due to circumstances which I will not go into) and I'm having trouble finding which role would be right for me.

I would like a role where I can very 'Involved' and that would be enjoyable. I'm not naive and I understand a job with the Royal Navy takes commitment and not everyday will be enjoyable...

I have considered a Seaman Specialist. What does this job involve? Training, etc? What is the role?

And finally any advice on joining at this age? Is it the same process?

    Thanks in advance anyway :)
  2. It's the same process whatever your age and you don't need qualifications to join. Have a look at the various roles on the RN website and see what job description floats your boat, then go and have a chat at your local AFCO.

Buff up on your maths and english (there's enough threads on here covering that) and go for the RT test.

Many moons ago, I sat the RT when I was 15 and joined at 16. You're not the first and won't be the last, unless they change the legislation.
  3. Thankyou for your help, I'm worried about the math. I absolutely hate it. What did you join as?
  4. I think that Wrecks was the first one in, so a bit of everything really :)

  5. If you are struggling with the maths bit, have you considered the green machine?
  6. I'm not familiar?
  7. Before Ninja arrives, change your username and picture! PERSEC etc etc.
  8. And your signature
  9. Sorry I only just joined yesterday what should I change them too?
  10. Anything you like, as long as it doesn't reference you personally e.g. name, location, DOB etc.

For example my profile pic isn't me, well I hope not anyway!

  11. Haha ok thankyou for helping the newbie
  12. Royal Marines. Or Royal Marines Light, also known as the Army.
  13. Haha, right okay. I think I will just put in the work and study to improve my math skills for a few months. I'm not really keen on joining the Army... Lol
  14. The branch I originally joined as doesn't exist anymore, I was an OEM (Ordnance Electrical Mechanic) which morphed into MEM(L) and is now ET(ME).

When I left I was a Marine Engineering Artificer (Electrical, Submarines). Before the comments start from the old and bold I was a Mech before we got called Tiffs (spit). Artificers no longer exist as a branch you can join up to either.
