Joining as a marine engineer (submariner)

Hi all,

I am currently in the process of joining the RN in the above role, I have my interview this week and would just like some advice to current or past members of the submarine fleet.

I am 22 years old and have always had the urge to join the RN but never had the boll**ks to do so, until we entered lockdown then I finally decided to go for it and stop being a big girls blouse.

My old man was in the navy and has always told me to do it as I 100% wont regret it, I know things would have changed a lot though from when he was in to now as its been 30years or so since he left. ive seen some people on the forum suggesting that I definitely wont regret it and just a select few saying to avoid it all costs, but this is all aimed at the RN in general and not specifically aimed at the subs.

any info would be great, cheers guys.

Everyone has different views on the RN based on personal experience, but it's always good to see both sides of people's views.
Me personally I would advise you to do it, you are at a young age to forge a long and rewarding career, if you put your mind to it.
I joined 2002 at the age of 16 and absolutely loved every second of it, unfortunately I had to leave after a few years due to family circumstances.
I'm now 34 and I put my application to rejoin last August and now have a intake date for raleigh this September.
I genuinely can't wait to get stuck back into navy life.
I have oppos who are still in the RN from when I passed out at Raleigh, and they are all on 17 years submarine service, and they absolutely love it, they have Been all over the place.
You get good days and bad days in the navy but that's the same as civvie Street.

The best thing to do is have a good look through the threads on here and gain as much info as you can on subs and navy life, I personally find this forum fantastic, you will read the same banter that you will experience in the mess deck, all good fun.

No doubt someone on here will comment and help you with info on subs life and work life.

Hope this is a little bit of help or info for you, if not sorry to have bored you :-D

Good luck with your interview and I would be more than happy to try and help if you need any advice for the interview.

Just be aware that you'll be based in Faslane, about 30 miles outside of Glasgow, but you'll be on the edge of the Highlands with Loch Lomond over the hill.

Something people have trouble getting their head round is zero contact with the outside world when you're at sea.

You definitely haven't bored me nozzer, I appreciate the help mate and the fact that you are joining the RN again for a second time paints a picture worth 1000 words!

And Wrecker I understand that I will be based up in Faslane, I live in the midlands so any place is far from home so to speak, I understand that some people struggle with having no contact with the outside world and I can't comment truly until I experience it but I can't see this being a problem for me, Im itching to leave my small town, with small minded people and go experience the big wide world whilst I'm young, make some great lifelong friends and of course have a great career whilst doing so.
