Welcome to the Navy Net aka Rum Ration

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial RN website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. Wow.....I was on HMS Amazon when it was being broached about women serving at sea, my gramps was spitting tacks at home, but it was the married guys that were taking the crap at home. We were locked in dock at the time. Plymouth, when the gearboxes were breaking apart same as the Coventry. The married spanners were dropping bits overboard as we couldn't go off until all bits were found. Never happened! But back to women on board and in the PBI.

I agree about the women doing great stuff in Intel with SAS/SBS etc and some at the pointy end (didn't one get killed a couple of years ago and the press prats went bonkers?)....I also agree women can have a viscious tear up. Personal experience on that one!
BUT....on the front line in Afghanistan with the PBI??? What's going to happen to them IF they get captured? And wouldn't they be targeted by the RH's for maximum worldwide press cover? Therefore putting the whole of their unit in extra danger?

Then the male factor. Regardless of the crap we can come out with most of us are hard-wired to protect the ball-busters!
That doubling of the unit danger level just got trebled.
I didn't stay just living in No8's.....I went sideways to Poole Barracks, 'nuff said.
But I have been at the pointy end of the stick Down South and a couple of other places, but in all honesty I would not, not NOT want women fighting along side me for so many reasons I can't begin. And I know some pretty cool and tough girls/women. Pitch of voice under stress comes to mind just as a start. Not being total team players and have a tad of a chip on their shoulder to prove themselves is another.
Fully armed, combat trained as support and combat ready Intel, no problem at all. But those are special sharp high IQ women.
To have a few thousand frontline who's job ops are the Mil or MacD, Lidl, Iceland or telesales etc....sorry but I'm not being an arse here, I want physical strength of mind and body, tenacity and strong decision making when its needed. Which I hear the women already with SAS/SBS/Combined Ops etc do have....but they are the few....NOT in their thousands which is what the MOD in their usual infinite wisdom are talking about.
    For me a non starter.

Open to debate on this, but you'll have to find ways around the key points to change my view on this.

As an addition, the Septics have done this, and thankfully we are above them. US women in the Mil carry a knife to stop the covered up rapes that occur to them, hundreds.
I VERY much doubt that would happen with us. I hope we are way above that. But it will remain an If-But-Maybe along with way too many other little details that if you add up every 5% reasons to say NO to this ends up as 70% NO no NO.

  2. To Scouse_Scribes, don't know how to add to this directly as only found the site days ago. Coming from Falmouth I know 'The Barn' and, well cat fights galore, west country and pretty much anywhere in this country that discards us!
Seen teeth knocked out, ears ripped off and in Bangkok one bang a stilleto into the forehead of another bar girl, deep.

But not the same when its a firefight, and as I wrote on this earlier, what happens if the RH's take one in Afghanistan?

I don't think this is inevitable, not as front line PBI, too many no's and not enough yes's......the Mil cannot be Politically Correct......my wife has listened to stories (father US Navy, Vietnam era)...and she just said, 'There are stories and then there are the real stories of things happening, and I'd be happier not hearing them, but now I have, the public are lucky they don't know'...

I wouldn't like to write THAT letter to their family. End of from me on this subject.
  3. Jack888 I just wondered if you are still serving?

At the end of the day if the powers that be decide women will take on combat roles then that's what will happen.
  4. If you read my views we are in agreement. I wrote twice on this and having had a few ex-IDF G'f's they agree IDF policy has changed, you can't change male hardwired mentality with an order.
Plus the IDF are not strict on the non-fraternisation rules. What happens if 'Woman Down' happens with someone you're playing hide the Frankfurter with?

Now there are more women in Mossad than anything that could be frontline....perfect. Although I did get put on the ground by the one I had a story with.......but that's a whole different story and not for here!
  5. That argument doesn't stand up to scrutiny either. It can be argued that many freindships run deeper than the relationship of someone you're 'playing hide the frankfurter' with. If a relationship is more serious than that then they shouldn't be fighting side by side in a Combat Role and would be separated.

In which case, same thing that happens when it's 'bezzer' down.
  6. I am impressed with your knowledge of the inside workings of The Institute!
  7. No mate, I resigned after Down South but got called back twice, with 11 other of my 'boys'.....can't say more about that as I have a writer now and am gonna piss off the MOD and Admiralty bouncing on & off the OSAct.

As to your comment, they can decide what they like. But in reality if the KIA or even worse LIA count goes high with units on the frontline, esp in RH lands the press will go bonkers and so will command.

Wrap your head around this as a headline on News Of the World or any other rag, "GORGEOUS BLONDE VANISHES TAKEN BY THE TALIBAN FROM THE FRONTLINE"

Don't know your age, experience of life or Mil history, but if your daughter, sister etc was the photo on the front page it would NOT be the same as even (god forbid) your son was taken or killed.

If that doesn't make my point you are not getting it. And believe me, I am not some anti-female git....I just realise from experience that everyone has their time and place, and frontline with the PBI (that's Poor Bloody Infantry) is NOT where women should be because they will be targetted and more men will die.
    THAT is the bottom line.

    Ah sod it....RN Combined Ops.....Ghosts
  8. With all due respect. You don't seem to be getting it. They're already there and doing the job, in numbers too.

...or until the "writer" publishes the memoirs of a bloke that served on HMS Amazon & then served operationally in the SBS Down South before "resigning?"

The author is advised to drop the word "Mil" from the memoirs if he aims to be considered remotely credible :glasses2:

  11. Given that it's possible to order soldiers to, for example, run in a suicidal fashion towards a machine gun nest or slaughter large groups of innocent women and children begging for their lives, the idea that you can't order them to act sensibly when a female oppo gets injured will require far more evidence than you've provided to be taken seriously.

Wow, you are so cool, I wish I was like you. I mean, to hint at knowing about secret stuff and then not saying anymore. Were I a woman my knickers would be wetter than an in use DRUI right now...

Can I touch you to get your awesomeness to rub off on me please?

    Yep, my thoughts precisely.

It made me want to sit, stock-still on my chestnut hoss in a rocky, boulder-strewn desert at twilight. The sky is glowing red whilst I tip back the peak of my stetson, gaze at the distant horizon through half closed eyes and take a long luxuriant draw on my Marlboro before hearing the satifying "spit - ding" as the discarded galvanised steel bucket chimes when struck by my well-aimed gob of tobacco juice. I can hear the posse of IDF babes, sigh in unison and in wistful admiration behind me. Yup, I'm da man.....

  17. It was more a ref to the IDF than us, two toally different Militaries and mentalities.
But how do the sleeping arrangements go off base somewhere?
On board ship I hear its pretty strict but it still happens, bigger the ship, more places to sneek off to.

Just going sideways on this one, I've been out a long time, are there women on Subs now?

    Signed Dinosaur................in this case!

Yeah, I guess the mind plays tricks if you've been out the mil for many years. We ain't got subs, except in the Spar/NAAFI. We ain't ever had Poole Barracks either, come to think of it.
  19. Got something to say, say it straight mate............if that's a joke its so limp it needs Viagra

You are full of shit, Walter.

I've started your very own thread here so you can continue to make a fool of yourself and shout at your computer.

There are Nelson Barracks, there was Eastney Barracks & Deal Barracks, but there was never a Poole Barracks.

If you are what you claim, verify your credentials on the OAMAAM website, otherwise run along.
