Is Illustrious an aircraft carrier or not?

I thought the 'through deck cruiser' title was a political decision of the day as we were down sizing or something like that.

Logic would dictate that irrespective of what the politico's called it, it carried FW aircraft, therefor is an 'aircraft carrier'.

As for it's LPH role, not in the true sense, more a spec ops platform with no provision for an amphibious assault!

You're right waspie originally the RN was drawing up a cruiser programme which is where the hull came from, then the government stated that after Ark Royal was decommissioned there would be no need for aircraft carriers. However the harrier enabled the advent of the light aircraft carrier, which is what the Invincible class really is, however to prevent political embarrassment they coined the term through deck cruiser.

It carries petrol pigeons that fly, doesn't matter if the wings stick out the sides or whirl around on top, therefore it carries craft of the air so logically a carrier of aircraft ergo an aircraft carrier.

But to quote Blackadder, even if they do go up diddly up, they're still gits ;)
