Hydrographic ships?

Welcome to the Navy Net aka Rum Ration

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial RN website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. Do these only go to antartica and circuit the UK, or do they go everywhere and anywhere? do they port much?, do Hydro, meteor, oceano specialists serve on these all the time, or could they serve on any ship, frigate, carrier etc?

Those who specialise as hyrdrographers survey world-wide as the RN produces global Admiralty charts besides UK & Antarctic coastal regions. Certain ship-types serve in different areas, such as ice-breakers where there's ice & coastal craft in inshore survey roles. Ocean going survey ships do as the name implies.

Meteorologist specialists generally serve on aircraft carriers and with deployed task groups worldwide.
  3. How did you get on at the AFCO, WYF?
  4. yeah was good thanks, just had a small chat with a navy officer, got some leaflets, going back on tuesday :D
  5. are you thinking of joing as a WS(HM) OR HM OFFICER? Just curious as a POA(METOC)

Odds are Soapy will be best qualified to offer advice in this area.
  7. Happy to offer any advice, as long as it's before 1530 when i slip and proceed on 3 and half weeks well deserved leave
  8. just a rating or whatever they call it
  9. Nicely put, I was JUST a rating once
  10. ok mate, you know there is a bout a 36 month wait to join as a WS(HM)?
after your basic training you will go off to MWS Drake for your HM training.
Sea draft wise as the branch is an merged branch of the old Metoc and SR branches, you will do survey ship time and Metoc time. To gain best expreience you want a CVS, where you will work alongside 2 Killicks and one other Metoc or WS(HM)
  11. Yeah and me. JUST a rating
  12. Hmm

Then how is it that I gave up some of my precious beauty sleep last night to explain to you about joining as an Officer and the need for UCAS points .........?

    "JUST a rating or whatever..."

You'll go far, shipmate. But not far enough for some, it seems...
  14. We await the answer with bated breath.
PS I'm sure you don't need beauty sleep Sol :)
  15. In your line we prefer a "JUST" rating   :D
  16. Now I know why you woke up irritable and wouldn't give me breakfast   :D
  17. I thought you normally dished out the brekkies  RR
  18. Serving on a pointy boaty thingy, or sinky floaty shippy type thingy?

  19. OF THE WEEK ?
  20. I'll probably get some flak for this but I'll just say that WYF is very young.
