Welcome to the Navy Net aka Rum Ration

  1. Driving home last night there was a 5 masted sailing cruise ship off the Island

Stopped to take a picture on the phone ... not too good quality but you get the idea!

Turns out its "Windsurf" largest sailing cruise ship in the world en route Portsmouth to Dublin (at a cost of $2900 pp) ... 319 passengers (191 crew) computer controlled self-furling sails (4 diesel donks driving two eletric motors) with a top speed of 12 knts under power and 17 knts with sails and power. Two swimming pools and two hot tubs! I've never seen anything like it before and thought she was absolutely stunning!

Sorry, but I find it quite ugly. Neither fish nor flesh, some sort of mongrel that should never have come into being.
  3. Your only pissed because it's powered by sail and probably only has a wee small engine for clankies to fiddle with!!!

  7. Aye,

But now re-named M5 (to scrimp on nameplate gold paint?).

She started a long refit down Falmouth way in spring last year.

A useless but interesting de-rigging fact:

<<...The UK's largest crane with a boom length of 104m (that’s twice the length of Nelson’s column) lifted the mast itself, with two further cranes supporting the forestays with an additional crane required for the tail of the mast. Local company Macsalvors provided two of these and further coordinated the hire of two specialist cranes from Ainscough...>>

When I saw the title I thought this was going to be a thread moaning about the luxury of Wardrooms ashore.
Seems steep. Are they going via Miami?
