How long to join RMR/PRMC?

  1. Hi, I'd be really grateful if anyone could help me with the following issue.

I today went to Portsmouth to join the Royal Marines Reserve (RMR). They were really friendly and helpful and gave me a load of bumf and forms to drop back to the Guildford office. The person I spoke to though was slightly unsure of how quickly I could undertake my PRMC. He said I could have the initial fitness test (treadmill run etc) around christmas time (6 weeks from now) but that the PRMC might be around Jan 2012. That doesn't sound right to me. I asked him if he meant Jan 2011 but he said no, and that there is no summer intake.

Does anyone know if this is the case? If so do I have any options other than to wait for Jan 2012?

Also, when can one join a holding group for the phys, at what stage of the process?

Many thanks in advanced. Also, if anyone is in the same boat re RMR London/Portsmouth and fancies smashing out some runs/phys before hand then let me know.

Generally RMR units only have one Recruit Troop per year.

The start dates for each troop may vary slightly, but certainly up north they start a holding troop around March culminating in a selection weekend/PRMRC in May and another holding troop in June, with a selection weekend/PRMRC in September. All those that make the grade kick-off RMR Recruit Training in September.

It's theoretically possible to complete training in around 12-14 months but i's not unusual to take a couple of years. The level of commitment is high & a couple of missed weekends can result in a back troop to start again the following September. The attrition rate is high - from 60 starting RMR Recruit Training in one unit last year, only about 5 or 6 will probably pass out this year. Bear in mind also, whilst it varies from region to region, in mine - only about 25% get through the AFCO side of selection, starting with the Recruiting Test.

As stated the system may vary locally, but the best thing to do is get the AFCO elements of selection completed ASAP, and get in touch with your local RMR unit who will give you a comprehensive brief.

  3. Thanks Ninja. Thats really useful info. Do you happen to know from your experience how long it would take for me to actually start day 1 of training if I put all my forms in the post today and everything went smoothly?

Many thanks for your help, I really appreciate it.

In my region, if you submitted an application around now, you would reasonably expect to start holding Troop around March '11, selection May '11 & commence RMR Recruit Training in Sept '11.

It may differ slightly in Portsmouth Det, but give them a call next week to find out.

    Good luck.
  5. Thanks a million!
