22 years. I still use a metal tray to put my meals into. I also insist on walking round the perimeter of the garden (shuffling slowly) and eventually reach the kitchen to collect my food. We also play bingo in the kitchen.

Was that 22 years in the Navy or 22 years in prison?

I realise some may equate both !

30 years and three months from a boy of 15 to a WO at 45. I had a ball with a couple of years in the Far East as well as a year swanning around the Caribbean and a a tour of South America. That’s without mentioning umpteen months in the Med.
I’d do it all again in a heartbeat.

Lucky bugger, I did 35 and it wasn't all a ball. In my younger years I was treat like a lump of shit off an A/B's shoe. By the time I joined my second ship, I thought I knew my way around the Navy. Wrong, but nevertheless, I did go through the promotion procedure and left as a Warrant. The years between Leading Hand and Warrant could make a Hollywood film, if you took out all the profanity. But like you said, other than the bad times, which were many, I wouldn't change a thing. Except, I would have left after 35 years as a Vice Admiral. I doubt that I could have gone further because of my time in RNDQ's. I definately would have done that, because those blokes were an inspiration. They were in and out and in and out of the nick, but what a bunch of realistic and enspiring people they were.
When I say enspiring, I'm talking about branch matters, eg Seamanship and stuff. Did you know that the leather from a cats tail could be made into a very servicable dog leash?

Must be a woman thing - I've got one at home like that, too.

I can remember as a child seeing older kids, and even older people who had already grown up. I can remember thinking: "When I am about 18, I will be grown up."

But it never happened......a point made on more than one occasion by the first Mrs Wightsparker.

However, I can also remember some fellow schoolchildren who were already grumpy old men by the time they were ten.

I think they may have become submariners....... :)

You wouldn't think that if you'd come to the SM2 re-union ;)

Ageing is inescapable but growing up is optional. I've tried to walk the tightrope and do both at the same time but that has been a failure. Being a submariner for 12 years didn't help :)

I get the same from mine "Act your age " is often said

I am 73 but not any relation to Blyth apart from joining a ship there many years ago, the only thing I remember was a bloody great wind turbine stuck on the pier

9 years D by P, not because of the mob - personal reasons, have great memories, three far east commissions and still reckon it was good times, like some others not sure what I'd think of things today - but no reason to hang sh-t on it!! Sorted me out.

I've always refused to act my age, however two things have happened recently which have made me realise that I'm getting old.
1. Was looking into hiring a van, can't have, cut off age is 75.
2. Next door neighbour tapped on the door and said that if we needed anything we only had to ask, I thought of asking if this included her 18 year old daughter, but for once in my life restrained myself.

other measure, if you fall over, do people come rushing to your aid, or stand point and piss themselves:confused: laughing?

I went to hold my daughters hand and skip along the shop, just like she used to enjoy 30 years ago, all I receive for my kind gesture was, Dad when are you going to grow up?
