How do we better the 'Army Reserve Offer'?

As an ex stoker I am pretty sure I could go onto any Hunt boat and after a few watches double banking I would be up to speed, and I have been outside 14 years now! That is what the RNR misses, ex service who have the skills join the RNR have to retrain to be logs or an upper deck sentry. What a waste of years of training IMHO.

Bikerman, might be too late for you, but the RNR Engineering Branch is coming! (Oh, I do hope they won't let those engineers in the Wardroom, what with all those smelly overalls though!)

No,

That's not Army reserve. That's what one regiment can put out. And there's the problem. We ain't got the clout. Imagine how I feel when I turn up with my little tent and someone comes and parks a Challenger 2 MBT next to it....... If i could put a Type 23 a hundred yards offshore it would be different....

You could anchor a T23, but it would be false advertising to 90% of the jobs in the RNR. At least the Army reserve can use the kit on show.

Small can be beautiful. CGS was called (alongside CAS) to sit on the naughty step by the PM as the Army Reserve and RaxAF did not meet their recruiting targets, however 1SL did! So perhaps your little recruiting gazebo is much more tailored! (And thus effective)

Like a tent or a trailer, yes. A Challenger tank, less so.

Recruiting in UK ports tends to be better when set against a backdrop such as this: Liverpool is a ?hands-on experience?, says commanding officer of HMS Dauntless - Liverpool Echo although you don't actually recruit at the time, you sow the seed & that is the key. What you are saying is "You could be part of this organisation" not "this will be your job".

Inland a helicopter with Royal Navy painted on it, landing in a school is a fantastic recruiting tool - not just for prospective helicopter pilots, for all branches of the service.

Probably did the headmaster a favour. He was able to make an insurance claim instead of digging into his general amenities fund.

That was the beauty of the MSFs, a nice little grey warship rocks up and arrives in a small harbour; lots of local interest and stacks of goodwill generated.

I recall when I was attached to HMS CAMBRIA, we had a CTP on HMS WAVENEY (M2003) in 1984 to show her off to the great and the good in Barry Dock and invited AOC and GOC Wales.

Both duly came along and AOC asked the cost of the ship: "£4m" was the reply. "That's less than an engine for a Tornado" said he. "Yes" replied our Supply Officer "and I bet you can't have a party like this in it either!"

Happy days....

Hmm, my first steamer, from 87 onwards. Suffered lots of those CTPs.

I look forward to the day when the RNR gets it's steamers, and you're on the same OPTEMPO as the rest of the Fleet. Ain't no CTPs in the current FOS......

Who woke up early with grump on?

I suspect even the mighty T23 zipping towards Putin on BALTOPS will enjoy a CTP or two.

Actually, it's the latest feedback from ships at sea. They pull in for a "port visit", do a capability demonstration (lots of people involved), store ship/maintenance/ sail the next day. All the team are threaders that their run ashore is nothing like it was in the early 80s.

Hoofing runs ashore are few and v far between these days - and it doesn't matter how good the runners if you're not able to get across the gangway.
