Housing benefit

Apologies if this has already been discussed but I was wondering if anyone knows if my Son will be classed as a non dependant once he goes to Raleigh next month? My husband works full time but I don't & we only get a very small amount of housing benefit anyway but the people dealing with our new claim in the office don't seem to have a clue! We have another 3 kids in full time education as well as the son who goes to Raleigh next month. He's only 16 so of course he'll still be living here when he's not away with the Navy. Thanks for reading [emoji4]

Yes I plan to lol. I don't care if they stop housing benefit completely to be honest, it's just that every person we speak to says different, some say he'll still be a dependant and some say he won't! We're going through all the new claims due to our oldest turning 18 and they keep changing things regarding my sons dependency. Last thing we need is an overpayment that will mount up and be slapped on us as a rather large bill a week before Christmas [emoji85] hope that makes more sense.

If you're getting conflicting advice the best way to proceed in my opinion is to accept that he will be out of the equation until such time as you're told differently. Budgets can always be adjusted to cope with extra cash but when it is a loss there will be stress. I do not speak with any experience in this field but see it as a common sense approach.

I'd of thought it would stop as he will be earning. But I'd give them a ring and ask for them to put the advice given in writing so if there's any chance of an overpayment you have evidence to back you up.

Not sure on this but I thought it was along the lines that when you signed for your lad to join the navy take on the responsibility of the parent, which would make him a non dependant for you, as long as he passes all his training and does not quit, the Navy have taken over the parental bit until he is 18. If he returned home for any reason on a permanent bases then back to you?

Thanks everyone [emoji4] the lady I've spoken to regarding child benefit said there's a 20 week overlap period when a child joins the forces and then he'll be classed as a non dependant - that simple! The housing benefit people still can't make up their minds [emoji52] guess it's just going to be a case of waiting and seeing [emoji1360]

I can see why there will be an overlap as no-one knows for certain that he will complete his initial training. Most do but some fall at the first fence. Good luck to your boy and I hope he makes you proud.
