HMS WILDFIRE (CHATHAM)

I am trying to get in touch with any old shipmates that served at WILDFIRE in Chatham during the period 1982 until its closure in 1995.
Would be good to hear from you
Regards
MAGGOT

I hadn't realised it had closed!!! In the RNXS we used to do some of our training there. I've just realised how much I miss teleprinters, punched paper tape, plotting and encrypting convoy routes! :( I don't miss radio morse code though!

Why o why did they close us down :?

Oh happy days in the RNXS...

TGNs are finally being removed from the RNR units - I don't miss them one iota! Correcting tryping errrrors using a TGN and paper tape, memorising the key elements of the Muraay code....ugh! Give me a cold wet signal deck any day!

I probably liked them because they reminded me of my first use of computers at school - punched cards in Fortran, I recall, but we're going back to the, er, mid 70s here... Oh the delights of feel-reading punched tape! Must be honest though, I prefer flashing an Aldis lamp.

I'm a bit too young to remember the Navy's presence at Chatham, despite having lived in Medway for my whole life, so can anyone give me a quick rundown of the closure of the Navy's presence here from '84 onwards.

Thanks

The site referenced earlier in the thread give specific history of WIldfire - the Home page is here.

Hi Maggot, I was there!!! I'm trying desperately trying to put a face to the name and the name is familiar. My interest in the Navy and particularly Wildfire has never gone away, but recently my youngest daughter joined TS Cornwallis and it has rekindled some of my happiest thoughts. I met my husband at Wildfire PO and then CPO Bob Forrester (Radar) and from Wildfire we got married and moved to Gibraltar. There I joined HMS Calpe till we left. I now live near Cliffe Woods, having been here for about 9 years. Unfortunately, Bob and I parted after 14 years. I now work in Dartford and have spent all my life in communications one way or another, so those fews years starting in Wildfire when I was only a baby did me good for the rest of my life....I miss those days so much, Chatham was never the same when Pembroke closed and ultimately Wildfire...Hope you do get in touch, regards Chris Barnett (nee Pollicott and Forrester!!!)
