HMS Ferret

Discussion in 'Royal Naval Reserve (RNR)' started by Kipling, Feb 24, 2015.

Welcome to the Navy Net aka Rum Ration

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial RN website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. Hi all,
I'm looking to join the reserve forces and am essentially looking at joining 3MI (army) or Ferret via HMS President. I'm looking for some opinions and advice etc. obviously, I am aware there are limitations with what can be discussed on an open forum.
I am also planning on going down to the open day at President at the beginning of March but I'm not sure how helpful that will be with answering my questions specific to Ferret rather then the RNR and the new entrant process as a whole.
My main question is what activities do Ferret get up to (in broad terms) is it very much just SIGINT or do they get involved in HUMINT and other broader int' activities? Also, how does ongoing training etc. work as my understanding is that if I were to join, successfully pass training etc. etc. then transfer to Ferret then I would continue to attend President week to week, so what kind of interaction would I have with Ferret and the int' world, would it just be courses etc?
Lastly, what are the chances/ the likelihood of deployments in the branch?

Thanks for any help you can give.
  2. Huge OPSEC issue answering most of that. I suggest you go to PRESIDENT and ask them there. In the unlikely event that there is nobody on board to answer your questions doubtless they will put you in touch.

What I can say is that weekends are used for training.
  3. I had a feeling that this might be the case, although I was hoping to get a broad answer in terms of the types of activity. Aside from the nature of the service I.e. Army rolling about in the mud etc. I'm trying to get an idea of where I'd be better off in terms of enjoying the work and types of deployment. I was planning on popping down to President for their open evening anyhow, but wasn't sure I'd find anyone from Ferret there.
  4. You certainly can remain at President after you transfer, and partake in thier activities as if you hadn't transferred to Ferret.
As for type of activities, the clue is in the service, RN = maritime-centric, Army = land-centric. However, not exclusively so, as a fare amount of int maritime reserves mobilised in the last 10 years have been to a sandy location.
As you say, you'll get much more info F2F - until them, open forum won't yield much.

    Good luck

You won't find much open source out there, but speaking as an individual with reasonable understanding of the two, then given the choice, I'd go 3MI anyday. The question better asked is 'do you want to be an intelligence professional' or 'do you want to be a 'sailor / soldier'. I'd strongly argue that 3MI delivers a career path and structure which FERRET cannot at present emulate. I would go FERRET if you felt that the dark blue lifestyle mattered / appealed more than the Green one.

There are some generic FAQs out there on this site, which FERRET put up a few years ago using a long defunct log in, and you'll find they're slightly dated but will give you a feel for what can be achieved there.

Happy to discuss in more detail via PM.

  6. Hi, it seems you have nearly exactly the same question I have regarding potentially signing up to the Naval Reserves and specialising in intelligence. I'm assuming you want to apply to enter as an officer as well? It seems without previous military experience it is only possible to enter intelligence directly as an direct officer route?

I'd be very interested for you to PM me if you found the information you were looking for. Did you go to the open evening at PRESIDENT and have your questions answered? When I went to my nearest unit's open evening, I asked some general questions but didn't ask in detail about FERRET as there were other people etc so short on time. I was given a card for Project HERMES if that what you were told as well?
  7. No branch/spec is open for anyone until they pass out of phase 1 (that's both officer and rating). However, Itel is now open to both officer and rating directly after passing out of RALEIGH or Fleetboard. If your unit is telling you otherwise, then they are behind the times.

  8. Out of interest, does HERMES count as Phase 1?
  9. HERMES is phase 1 (all apart from Fleetboard)

SR - please report to bar and purchase a round of G&Ts for all present for your mistake of saying 'Intel' not 'Int'.

I'd have thought you knew better than that by now ;-)
  11. DG&T on you fella, INT is too close to Int, so Int =Intel

You may think that Mr SR, but given the Community uses 'int', trying to turn a widely recognised abbreviation into one that helps your simple little mind cope isn't cricket. Two rounds please :)
  13. My mind is very simple, along with the majority of those who can't distiguish between Int and INT. Delighted to buy you a tripple next time I'm up in the smoke, but only if you buy me round too!

Thank god its a tiny number of simple people then - entire uk intelligence community and its customers who use 'int' or a very small number of rnr who cant tell the difference.

Talk about being special in reserve!
