HMS Ark Royal to be scrapped

Ark Royal being scrapped?

Nae Bother - For 'twas only a mere Cruiser (through-deck).

And anyway. we'll soon have a real live Cruiser (Jutland = HMS CAROLINE) back in Pawsmiff Dorkyard to replace our torched Dinosaur.

mighty impression they made on me with their efforts in 82 couldn't hit a fcuking runway

You mean this one?

The one with the deep heave craters in it?

I seem to remember out of about 14 bombs dropped from a great height on ly one hit the target, and hte Argies filled the hole in before the Vulcans got back to the Azores,
Mind you most of the crabs couldn't hit a splash target from 200ft so how do they expect them to hit a runway from 40000

Looks to me more like 28 bombs??

Yes, they filled it but the runway was no use for fast jets and was only used by C130 transport after the attack due to the piss poor job the Argies did of the repairs (they kept sinking) so, credit where it was due, the crabs did what they were sent to do in very difficult cicrumstances

The Fleet Air Arm, the world’s oldest air force, is likely to disappear after the 44 strong fleet of Harrier jump jets are scrapped.

Because that's the only aircraft they operate

Would the last person to leave the Royal Navy please switch off the lights.

Defence cuts mate, there are no lights, but we will certainly see that the candles are snubbed. 8O :D

Candles once ignited cannot be snubbed out, knock off the klinker into the gash bin and immerce with water :)

A campaign is underway to save the Ark Royal from the breakers yard.

Jimmy Johnston, MBE, says that the Ark Royal is a tremendous bit of engineering excellence - which should not be sold to a breakers yard but have its life extended in a completely new role as a base for humanitarian work around the world.

A fine idea but I doubt it will come to anything alas. These things hardly ever do despite peoples best efforts. God I hate being a Sunday Pessimist :p

And is Jimmy going to fund this operation?

How much does Ark cost to run for a year? If I remember a T42 is about £17m a year (ish, about), so i'm guessing she'll be a damn sight more. I think Bell are selling brand new, spankers Huey UH-1Y's for $2m an airframe, they'll do...

Yeah, I can see that working

Royal Flying Corps came first I think and didn't The Royal Naval Flying Service pre-date the RAF?

Slim, I have no idea. :p I don't know Jimmy Johnston personally.
The man appears to be an entrepreneur who does work for the charity Rotary International. He is listed on LinkedIn.

As Scouse has already said, it is a nice idea, but ......

Im suprised the ship hasnt been offered to any foreign navies but I suppose the most likely buyers would someone unacceptable like the Argies or someone who can barely afford to maintain the one they have, like the Indians so a no go.

I have no idea who Jimmy is but he is really out of his depth if he thinks Ark can be saved from scrap and used as a charity ship.
The running costs would far outstrip any benefits gained.
Sorry the man is a complete idiot who hasn't thought this through at all!

Here's a thought......
Why not sell it to the Indian Navy.......
Then they can pay us with the money we've just given them in foreign aid.

I know...I know.... I'll get me coat....

The Argies couldn't afford the Ark, and anyhow, they still maintain A4-Fighting Hawks at carrier readiness using the Brazilian Sao Paulo and visiting US carriers (conventinal cat and trap carriers). So they wouldn't have any aircraft to fly off the Ark if they had it.

You obviously know nothing about the Indian Navy.

They are very well funded with a much much larger fleet than ours now. They somehow manage to keep Hermes (Viraat) operable, and have upgraded her significantly over the past 25 years. They are also building a CV of their own, a completely indigenous design, and have also bought the ex-Admiral Gorshkov carrier off the Russians (after a complete rebuild), and have bought brand new MiG-29K's to fly off it.
They also have just leased a brand new Akula off the Russians, being the newest country to operate an SSN. Their SSK capability is unrivaled in the region.

So, yeah, slag the Indian's off at your peril. They'd probably love Ark to be fair, and get another 25 years out of her.

Yes and with the £295,000,000 hand out from the UK, why they could probably buy another ex Ruskie warship.
Better still we could give em the Ark and keep the money. 8O

If I'm to start at Raleigh at the end of next year- as they've told me, will I still get a chance to serve on this old girl before she's retired? :(
