I'm helping a cousin reseach family history.

A relative is shown in family documents as ''died in France 17.04.1918'

On the Gourock War Memorial he is shown as being HMS Afric Scot.

I can find no record of a ship of this name.

He has no record on the CWGC website either.

    Anyone any ideas?
  2. Try looking up his name on one of the family history websites, that have ww1 RN records covered.
you should be able to track him from that

I'm a member of Ancestry & also looked him up on here:
    Navy and Naval History.Net

    No trace
I see there was a White Star ship Afric, sunk by U boat 1917 and also an HMAT Afric also sunk the Channel in 1917.
Except for the memorial he seems to have no trace.
Tried civilian deaths in Scotland & England as well.

I tried Ships Nostalgia which has all sorts of merchant ships on it, no joy (sounds like a merchantman taken over by the RN). Maybe a trawler?

Try this site Royal Naval Patrol Service its mostly concerned with the Royal Naval Patrol Service, which covered things like trawlers and armed tugs. If you put a query onto their forum someone will normally try to help
