HM Officer recruitment timescales

My daughter is applying for a position as a HM Officer. She is currently waiting for her AIB, she has been told that could be in another 9-12 months! If she passes the board, does anyone know the wait time after that? She needs to start thinking about her options, she’s currently in her last year of A levels. Thanks in advance.

I have no idea on waiting times but it is a good plan not to put your life on hold while waiting. If the timing you have been advised is anywhere near correct her A levels should be done and dusted before AIB. I'm guessing the results of those will dictate where she goes after that. Have a plan B as recruitment to some branches depends on numbers required and available candidates so there could be a long wait.

For awareness, it is very likely direct entry HM Officers will cease.

If she wants to do it, she’ll have to join as a Warfare Officer and then sub-specialise later on.

Do you know if the HM Specialist (rating) role will continue? Maybe she should consider that route instead and work her way up the ranks ?

Surely not, that would make them useful members of the armed forces. (Reference the H side of the branch)

As @alfred_the_great said HM Ofiicer role is going to be closed to direct entry. When exactly I'm not sure. Ratings will continue but will more than likely be pushed to go M. You may be lucky and be on the last in take. Once passed out of BRNC your daughter will be a warfare officer, and ply her trade on a HM ship, then after that they will train as both H And M specialists. So however she enters the branch she will be a warfare officer.

One issue if find is the careers office have little or no knowledge of this branch so give general of historic information. To put it into perspective the branch probably only recruit around 20 people a year.

Its a great branch and I thoroughly enjoy what I do, and happy to answer any questions.

Thank you so much for this information which I will pass on to my daughter.

This role/branch is all she has ever wanted to do since the age of 12, after a visit to our local AFCO. She then joined the Sea Cadets (currently Leading Cadet) and will be ageing out next month, she’s staying on as a volunteer to get some more leading experience under her belt.

I honestly cannot see her doing anything else, so keeping everything crossed that she passes her AIB and gets to BRNC hopefully some time next year.

I am sure she will message you with questions, like you say there don’t seem to be many people to chat to who ‘know’.

Thanks again!
