Gunnery Porn

I only played in 4.5" Mk 6 turret on OEM's course and LOEM's course.

Scared the sh1t out of me, I was so glad my only grey thing had Bofors and then I went to boats as a back afty.

An SLR was the biggest bang stick I regularly shot and I was happy with that, SA80's were toys compared to the SLR though :)

The hiss of the air blast, the smell of the cordite, the noise of the rammers...........both guns empty,
Yes nurse, I'll be ok in a minute.
Ah, memories. :)

After having 3 Mk.8's at sea I was drafted to HMS Cambridge to help maintain the two remaining Mk.6 turrets, No.s 6 & 7.
Although the WE's were the maintainers, we helped to man the gunbay during firing serials. We had an arrangement whereby we supplemented our WE maitenance team with gunners from the manpower pool, an idea which worked very well.
The gunners enjoyed getting technical and the WE's enjoyed a change of pace throwing "old school" 4.5" ammunition around. Win/win.

The last ever Mk.6 shoot was fun. A couple of ranging salvoes, then the order came over the broacast, "FIFTY rounds, fire for effect!"

Happy days.:)
