Guardian: "Women To Serve On RN Submarines From 2013"

#21
A few more big girls in the wardroom won't make any difference. All appears to be well with mixed crews in GS or so we're told so extending it to Boats was a natural progression though living and working conditions bear little similarity.

Didn't know Nelson had submarines to let them on board. Wow everyday is an education.

Aside but interesting to note that the MoD_RSS posted the news at #25 on this thread.

<<Issued 8 Dec 11>> So still a couple of days adrift (again - bless them) but at least they didn't just bung it at RR as a New Thread as is their usual custom...

......OTOH, perhaps they did but one of our sharper MODs swiftly shifted it on this forum for 'em.:slow:

Yep. They'll serve breakfast and they'll serve dinner and they'll serve tea and nine'o'clockers and each one of them will have an extra locker in the bunk- space for the stowage of shoes. How does this affect the viewing of porno DVD's in the messes then? I can visualise a lot of net curtains, ornaments, nick-nacks and harback copies of the *Next* catalogue cluttering up the place, and the mess porno DVD stowage is going to be topped up with box-sets of "Coronation Street" "Eastenders" "Emmerdale" and if you're on the surface - all you are going to see on the box is the "Good Food Channel". Hot bunking could be kind of interesting though. Good luck to our future Sun Damsel-dodgers or whatever they're going to be called. (Bubbletits? Sub-Mary-Annas?..........oh I dunno).

Can you also imagine the Night Chef (female?) toiling away for the boys? Someone asks her what she
has put on as a special night-time treat and she answers (with a very straight face),

"I've got a fanny full of soup........fancy some then?"

I guess people will just have to get used to no more P0rn in the mess as well as keeping mags such as Nuts/Zoo etc out of the way if they offend. The issues of ablutions and showers are bound to cause problems and it is going to be so much fun when there are no more showers as the water is all going aft.

Good luck to the first female pusser. She will - as the previous poster alluded to - have to deal with being the pusser through the maintenance period and storing, qualifying, being banned from the mess until qualified apart from at meal times where she will get baited by the dabbers and having to understand that she isnt being victimised, that it is all normal treatment - until qualified!

Isn't that the problem though? The Submarine Service is the last bastion of "old-school" Naval ethos, whether or not our masters agree. A lot of what might be construed as "bullying" goes on, especially whilst qualifying. Is the way we treat the non-quals right? Probably not, but I would argue that it is accepted practice - to a point. Will it change the Submarine Service if this "normal treatment" is banned? Definately, but I guess the Service will have no choice but to adapt and catch up with the rest of the Navy in this respect.

Too right. Harassment and bullying is never right. The "Accepted practise" line is a very weak and spineless act of submission.

I recall the SM navigators course coming on Campbeltown and expressing surprise at not being constantly shouted at and abused. Strangely in the environment that we provided them they were able to concentrate on developing their professional skills and pass the course.

What a total load of bollox. The simple matter of fact is, that until you are qualified you are of absolutely no use to your shipmates and contribute absolutely nothing to the OC of the unit. As you have probably discovered by now sitting on your fat arse in the mess drinking tea and watching movies is not condusive to achieving the aim. Encouraging you to complete your Pt 3/SMQ/BSQ taskbook/watchkeeping qualifications in the shortest order is. This is not bullying. Have you been slacking and had your horoscope read by the MEO per chance?

Have a nice day

There is a difference between getting qual'd, which if you have an ounce of pride about you you'll want to crack quickly, and the twat-like behaviour I've heard first hand from entire Wardrooms of SMs. Apparently it's because life is a bit pressurised and it's the only leadership style they know.

So to quote you: "I've heard", but you've not experienced? An autocratic style of Leadership is not "the only style they know". I have not "heard" I have experienced.

I'm not speaking from personal experience. I have always been fully prepared to pump slop and shit and dig out with the rest of 'em.
Of course "sitting on your fat arse in the mess drinking tea and watching movies" isn't the best way to get on in life - how the fuck do you think I got from a Junior AB to the Wardroom after nearly 22 years in the Mob - so don't dare to prejudge me or my work ethic.

I'm simply saying that there are ways to encourage people to complete their taskbooks that don't involve harassment and bullying of the individual - and that things will have to change because (sweeping generalisations aside) your average female Officer or Rating will not put up with same shit that your average male Submariner will.

If the cap fits wear it Princess. Bullying is not tolerated in the Royal Navy simple as, if your experience personal or otherwise, suggests differently I would suggest you have failed in your duty by not reporting it through the Chain of Command and instead making allegations of harrasment and bullying on an internet forum.

Have a nice evening
