Those with knowledge of repair facilities at Faslane could explain better.

Written like a journalist. Explaining the nuclear submarine repair capabilities of one facility over another may be sailing close to the wind. The Astute threads have avoided that so far, let's keep it that way.

Trivia corner; one of the MCA emergency tugs (not this one) went aground in 2005. A lot of damage and she was OOA for some time. IIRC, the skipper was shitfaced.

"But the damage done by the tug could result in a multi-million pound repair bill. It's ironic."

And I thought it was made of steel :D

Not too correct, we went into Faslane and repaired the rudder gear on a nuke boat in 1979, and not a green overalled dockie sight, if I remember right we worked 24 hrs on that, WreckerL may be able to confirm that

Certainly remember being in AFD 60 dock bottom for 36 hours solid replacing the egg beater, all done by NTD duty watch and ships staff. Barstewards started flooding up whilst me and the Chief tiff were still in the dock bottom.

That was around the same time.

Work on Swiftsure was to take 3 months in dry dock in Guzz so we went to Fazers instead and it only took only 2 weeks in AFD 60. They worked bl00dy hard

Used on every boat I had, mainly to help with manouvering the boat coming alongside.

Long time ago...

I knew a bloke who told me his story about the 'Egg Beater' he was maintaining.....he said it just gently slipped away.....and then....

True dit.

I heard that that Astute was already on the surface and the tug inadvertently pushed the boat onto the rocks. The Captain wasn't blameworthy.

Straight up Guv'nor. I can't tell a lie it was him.........

Yup. I heard it, too, shortly afterwards from 'Them wot was there with the spanners and who got a bit wet'. As I recall:

"......v. poor documentation.......Anyway, let's try THIS........Whoops.........Hatches & B'heads shut down (Salvage Blow?)......Diving Team at the rush......temp. blanking plate....muddy EB recovered.......Sorted".

Still not as bad as all the accidents that have occured on those crappy S boats over the years - the unskilled maintainance that took place was shocking - this coming from a bomber rating as well!
