golden handshake conditions

#1
Hello All,

I am considering applying to be a Training Management Officer. I have looked through quite a few of the site's threads to find additional technical information along with the personal experience of others. So a big thank you to Trainer, Sea_vixen amongst others for providing detailed information.

One thing that I have not been able to find however is the exact terms for receiving the "golden handshake". It is my understanding that everyone receives this at the same rate: 7k Commence Phase 1; 10k Completing Phase 1; 10k completing phase 2, is anyone able to confirm that this is true? That there are no circumstances under which one could expect to receive less money? For example, would experience with the reserves prevent you from gaining the bonus as this isn't your first role with the navy?

To the best of my knowledge only engineering officers get the £27k golden hello. They get it in three £9k stages, the last on completion of training.

TMOs no longer need an engineering or science based degree and no longer qualify for the £27k joining bounty, much the same as anyone else joining with a non vocational degree.

Hello Ninja_Stoker,

Thank you for your swift reply, I will seek confirmation on this from local recruitment office on Monday as it is a view I've seen mirrored by several people. I believe that the confusion could arise from the specific page for training management officers making no reference to the 27k, whereas the graduate brochure and FAQs mention it.

The following letter from the MoD that I found online seems to support what you are saying:
"With regard to your second query on Training Management Officers (TMOs), I can confirm that mention of a £27,000 pay recruitment incentive for this specialisation was a mistake, and there is no such financial incentive payable to those recruited as TMOs. I need to thank you for bringing this inaccuracy to our attention and confirm that it has now been rectified." 11 May 2017 Source: https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/628150/2017-04562.pdf

I guess that this then creates one of two situations, the incentive has been cut and the above have not been updated since May 2017, or the scheme has been reintroduced.

Thank you for your assistance in this thread and others, your insights into the workings of the Navy have been invaluable!

Sadly I'm fairly sure it hasn't been re-introduced. When they took away the requirement for a technical degree and continued to offer a joining bonus for TMO, I suspect a fair number of those graduates considering joining as Warfare or Logistics Officers opted to join as TM's thus redressing the manning shortfall (as intended).

Suffice to say the service will only throw money where there's a problem and we're now at manning balance for schoolies.

Hello All,

I checked in with my local recruitment officer about this topic, according to his fact sheet, there was no 27k handshake for this role. He informed me that he would raise this error with people further up the chain of the command so that the error could be fixed on the website.

I also inquired into the intake for this particular role as I have seen comments that suggest that this particular branch has quite a low amount of members. The recruiter told me that in his years of experience he has only met three schoolies and that he suspected the number of people recruited for this particular role would be very low. If anyone can offer more information on this topic I would be very grateful.

That pretty much aligns with my knowledge of TMO.

What queries do you want to know about which your AFCO weren't able to answer?

There are plenty of TMOs, it is no longer a shortage category branch but there should still be three intakes a year.

I guess there would be no further questions, he seemed to think that there was only one intake a year for them without checking.

Thank you for your assistance
