Going it Alone, New Servers and Donations

Thanks for all the support - overwhelming as you can see from the list in the donations module. To answer a few of the questions (although some have been answered by email)

Wompingwillow - hope all's OK. Your username only is on the front not real name. The names did disappear shortly for some reason, but I put them back on again.

If we get a donation without a username we just write and ask if the medals were wanted.

If you want a send a cheque I won't complain of course :) - just write and ask and I'll reply with the best place to send it at that moment depending on who's in UK etc.

By the way the medals, emailing and sometimes front page entries are done manually so it can take a day or so to happen sometimes.

Thanks to all!

Forgive a semi-old ex jack for asking, but as I do not put card details over the ether, can I send a cheque ?

Here is the request please donate to RR

Here is the problem. I do not have a PayPal Account and having tried to open one I have no intentions of trying again. I have to do it in Spanish

Solution: I have an UK Credit card

Problem: My Billing address is in Spain your system will not allow me to donate as it only accepts billing addresses with a UK Post Code I don't have one of them.

I will have to retain my money.

NUtty

I thought you could put money into your paypal account by doing an electronic transfer from your bank account (very easy if you use online banking, in this country anyway). Don't ask me how, but I am told this is possible. You can then donate by paypal. I don't think you have to have a credit card, but of course I could be talking complete sh*te.

Brains (Why did you pick that name)

You are not reading wot I wrote. To open a Paypal Account in UK you have to have a UK address and post code. To open a Paypal account in Spain is simple if you have a Spanish address and a good grasp of written IT Spanish when we all know IT people use words that do not mean the same thing in every day life. I have spent between 10 and 12 hours trying to open a Paypal account in the UK or Spain let alone operate it in Spanish.

Some credit card billing systems require that your billing address must have a UK post code that matches that your credit card supplier holds as your billing address. I am in Spain hence no post code hence no dosh to RR.

Oh stupid me I forgot to say my spoken Spanish has reached the stage where I am out of the egg but still a very very small fledgling. The locals are so sweet that when you stumble with you Spanish, after about four words they jump in to help you with English, this does not advance the learning curve much.

PS I await sensible suggestions

Thanks for the info, who 'owns' RR and decides in which direction it goes? Tried to find this info on the site but probably wasnt looking in the right place.

I asked this on another thread re the new servers but this seems a more popular thread......

Fair call and worth an answer as I'm sure more people than just you are interested so here goes .....

Rum Ration is owned by Good CO and Bad CO who also own ARRSE and Rear Party. GCO is a former infantry officer now studying for an MSc and I'm a serving Army officer so we have no real naval links. We started RR after it became obvious that no-one else out there seemed interested in doing so. With 3 years experience of running ARRSE we also felt that we were in a good position to do so.

In terms of the 'direction' that the site goes in, I think we rely very heavily on our moderators and the more experienced users to guide us on this. Our general principles though will remain similar to those we operate on ARRSE in that we try to provide an informative, interesting, humorous and useful site. We try to clamp down on antisocial behaviour such as racism whilst enabling freedom of speech and anonymity yet keeping a close eye on OPSEC. Needless to say this is a difficult line to tread and inevitably we don't keep everyone happy all the time.

The question of money is one that I'm sure people are interested in so I'll tackle it head on. Do we do this for the good of our souls - of course not! On the other hand you should not underestimate the amount of time and money it takes to run our sites. In the last 12 months we have spent over £4000 on servers, £2500 on hosting and are planning to spend about the same again in the next 12 months. GCO and myself routinely spend about 2-3 hours per night on site business (answering emails mainly but also upgrading software, backups, etc). See the recent developments on E-Goat if you don't appreciate the importance of getting this right .......

I hope that this answer is satisfactory but if not then please let me know what you think we should do ......

Thanks BadCO,

Well explained, you deserve another pip

Any chance on an update as to whether those of us wary of the ether and cheque card numbers can send you/RR a cheque please?

:)

I've followed the previous link about donating funds by cheque, three times now, and still no answer ?
:???:

I'd recommend sending an email to [email protected] to elicit a quicker response - the bosses don't always log in to the site, and therefore PMs build up in their inbox until they get lost!! If you email, you will usually get a response back the same day.

Done that, almost qualified for the T shirt now - they'll have to be quick before the ex/taxman/etc etc gets their share..!!

ps but will try again - I'm nothing but patient (though my OH may say different..... !!)
