Gibraltar Calls For Increased Royal Navy Presence

Agreed it won't stop the Spanish closing the border, and you are quite right, even having those that follow in the footsteps of those who won the Rock wouldn't stop that. But a slight bigger pusser's grey patrol vessel might just give the Guardia "not very" Civil something to think about the next time they want to incur into Gibraltar's TTW and hassle vessels they have no right to hassle.

Do as I did when I was there: walk or buy a scooter (or use a non-UK passport!)... Bingo. No queues! :thumbleft:

SPB - you could not be more wrong! Look again at the photo from the Mail. There is a discrete lane off the Rock especially for 2 wheeled vehiles and on Friday and Saturday they were stopping and checking EVERY putt putt and car!

"Or" was the operative word...

We both know the over-reliance of vehicles by the Fraggles; I've never seen so many 4x4 cars in a place (well, apart from Kensington). It is a well known fact that there are not enough roads on The Rock to accommodate all the cars that people own, if they were laid end-to-end. Anyway, I'm sure it won't be long before the game of tit-for-tat begins and Spanish-plated vehicles crossing the border are inconvenienced by the Gibraltarian authorities...

Won't happen, as a huge majority of Spanish plated cars going onto the Rock are owned by ex-pats going shopping at Morrissons!

Agree with the other comments though!

To digress slightly - I had to do an Admiralty driving test in a LWB Landy in Gib once. There were several of us being assessed at the time. When my turn came we were up at Windy Ridge and I had to do a 3 point turn in a LHD Landy 1200 feet up on a very narrow track. Not helped by the troops going 'Cor, look at that view!'

I used to keep my UK registered car garaged in La Linea and just walk over and off you go. Cant remember the cost of the Garage but the car was more useful to me weekending in Spain than as a singly on the Rock

Anything the Spanish fishermen have 'lost' is entirely due to the way the Spanish fish the seas. They will take ANYTHING regardless of season or size.

At our local market every Christmas there will be a gaggle of fishermen selling tiny fish about an inch long, by the bucket. They are a delicacy........ I wonder why they need lookouts while they are selling these fish?

I'm all in favour of this artificial reef. But in our town they tried to build one to encourage fish stocks and also visting divers. Hey, guess what? It was stopped by........ the fishermen!

On the 'charging a border crossing fee' thing, the Mayor of La Linea tried to get that off the ground a few months ago and was well kicked into touch as it is against all rules of the EU.

I wonder why the great EU is so quiet on this saga at the moment?

Because neither the UK or Gib are fully in the EU, and thus Spain can implement processes to 'protect' it's borders.

At least they won't bomb Gib, they've flogged their aircraft to Argentina. It would be interesting if Spain asked for our help getting them back when Argentina can't pay the bill :)

Buggers wouldn't pay the bill anyway even if they could. They have previous :p

"Going Argentinian" should become the slang word for doing a bunk out the toilets window and leaving your date with the bill :p

Sounds like its heading back to the old days with the border closed and aircraft making a detour avoiding Spanish airspace! Ahh happy days!

Mind may give me an opening line today when the Minister of Health for Gib tips up to open our new lab and gets a guided tour to meet the lab staff!
