BBC blurb
The crash revived memories of the crash involving the Costa Concordia cruise ship off the Italian island of Giglio in January 2012, which left 32 people dead.
That is lame journalistic padding. Whose memories?

The tower's position would appear to make it vulnerable to being struck by ships.

Not half as much as the chuffing island of Giglio!

Completely different scenarios. One was due to deliberate negligence on the part of the master - the other is still being investigated but there appears to have been a malfunction in propulsion and/or control that has caused the vessel to veer off intended course. The position of the structure, at the end of a harbour wall, does seem to be a bit close and easily able to be hit by collision, which is of course what has happened.
