Future in Mine Warfare Specialist

Hi Everyone. First post here so no doubt I’ll get a grilling.

I’ve been considering a career change recently as I don’t think I’ve got the right character traits (or the general interest) to perform it for years to come at top level. Think 100% desk jockey; forecasting & report writing with lots of daydreaming and you wouldn’t be too far off my day role. For a while had a desire to take a long sabbatical/quit the job and do a thru-hike in the USA but Covid and US VISA/insurance/seasonal windows will likely put a stop to that until 2022. Covid has exacerbated the situation and made me think wider - what I do with myself while I still have time for something else.

I found myself on the RN website with the Mine Warfare Specialist role as a positive match in my criteria. Reading as much as I can online/this website, what it entails sounds good; small ships, cross rank personnel bonding, 'always' active, diverse responsibilities compared to larger vessels… all sounds good.

…. there must be a catch.

Cummings recent funding report hinted that the “minesweepers could also be axed”. I found a post on here dating back from 2018 that MW was a shortage role and speaking to the AFCO on Monday, it’s still a shortage role. Savetheroyalnavy website shows lots of automatic MW drone development going on– being launched from ground locations or steel based ships. Someone posted here that their (unmentioned department) morale is zero as their end is nigh and looking at the above, I’ll guess it is MW.

Out of the frying pan into the fire? Is there a future in MW?

Would really appreciate some help with this on. PM me directly if you’d like to hide. 2nd role ive got on my list is Warfare Intelligence Specialist.

Hi Soleil. Thanks for the reply.

GCSE, A Levels, Degree (2.2) in Computer Networks, PRINCE2 Practitioner, Cisco CCNA and was studying for ITIL foundation before I lost enthusiasm.

All tech based but I'm in the management arena and not configuring anything. I'd like to get away from it and do a Navy role for the Navy, not tech/comms role for the Navy if you understand where I'm coming from.

No history in the Navy either, couldn't get further away from the sea actually - I'm in Nottingham presently. Done loads of Kitesurfing and surfing historically so I know the sea is a dangerous beast. Part of the appeal actually to do something very different. I'm actually very annoyed the 4 day assessment is postponed/cancelled as I'd really appreciate a taster before committing 100%.

Would Warfare Officer appeal? It might be the challenge you are looking for.

I'm 33 so I don't think I can, directly.
The website is stating that the maximum age for entry as a Warfare Officer is 39.

When I put your details through the role finder, it suggested Warfare Officer in the list.

I agree any job in the mob is great, however, if you can become an officer, it's a better option with better opportunities. God how I regret knocking my D.O. back for recommending me for UY.

Thanks Soleil.
I think in my hastiness, I bypassed officer selection on the website. I’m a detail and analysis kind of guy; looking up facts and defecating stats. I’ll take a second look however. Cheers!

Hi Biker.
As above, I’ll take a 2nd look. Maybe I could try for officer first and if I’m unsuccessful, try for the specialist role? Timing plays a part in this. If there is a role which is needed then my theoretical start date is much sooner. If the wait list for officer is ~2 years, then, ouch.

Have a look at this role then as well, DR.

Do you like the Middle East or the Baltic’s? If so, ideal. That’s where you will spend most of your career. All. The. Time.

Location wise, id be happy with either! More so the Baltic regions from initial thoughts.

Only hold back at this moment is duration and frequency away from family in the UK; dad took a tumble this weekend and spend a night in A&E. Understood that RN is a lifestyle change but im going to experience the withering of my father via a mobile phone in port/30min periods a week. A sobering moment from my initial gusto.

As I said in my initial post, 2nd role on my mind is the Intelligence role. On this forum, I've read that its mostly UK based. Would I likely get weekend leave (lets says once a month) to visit family?

If I am brutally honest. I’d chat with your AFCO and based upon the estimates of your progression through the system, weigh up whether to defer your application based on your family issues. You will need to be 100% focused on initially Phase 1/2 and then potentially deployed for, if on an MCMV a considerable amount of time. The potential of being away from family that may need your support.

I don’t know your personal circumstances, nor would I ask you to divulge them. Deployments and UK running can be busy periods and the potential to contact home is limited.

Fore warned, fore armed.

HTH.

Edited to add: if your username is your actual name, I’d look at changing it.

Oh Douglas, I'm very sorry to hear about your Dad.

I do hope that he is feeling better now.

In the circumstances, would joining as a Reservist at this particular point be the better option for you?

I wonder whether you would find somewhere to your taste at HMS Ferret?

I think that the name is a character in a programme called the IT Crowd, which was about IT. I don't remember it myself but the title of the programme is familiar.

I've got their 100% support to apply for RN; especially from my dad. I'll talk it through but I think i'll move to another position.

I've dabbled with intelligence roles in the past and ive previously held DV. The Slime came over to our office HQ and I spent a bit of time with them, but I put my application on hold to concentrate on other hobbies with them (I did Ironman instead).

If you know of any tests the Intel roles might go through, please let me know. Programme manager roles just delegate and report and I think a wooden spoon might return higher IQ results if I sat one without a bit of preparation!

Yea he's fine, just took a fall and bumped his head on the way down. Could have been anyone but highlights a vulnerability....and the future really.

I'm not looking into Reservist roles, im here to move away from Telecom sector into something more engaging/exciting while age is on my side and not be a "could have been" that will eat at me for the rest of my life. Thanks for the awareness though.

yea, username is from IT Crowd.
