Funny Hats and Loud Shirts

As the season of goodwill, family rows and p*ss-ups approaches, Father Famine's comments on an earlier thread have reminded me that there are more important things in life than the dwindling size of the Fleet, the civillianisation of stone frigates and recruiting problems.

FF was advising a baby sailor what essentials he needed to take on board his first ship, and amidst a torrent of useful and not-so-useful suggestions by members of this cybercommunity, he advised the following...

'...oh and a Funny Hat, you've got to have a Funny Hat and maybe a Loud Shirt, the louder the better, you wouldn't want to miss a good run ashore coz you haven't got the right gear.'

This thread is to share experiences and piccies (if available) of those loud shirts and funny hats (no I don't mean sailors' hats) you matelots wore or claim to have worn on your conquests of the seven seas, runs ashore and Crossing the Line Ceremonies.

Roll on...

Definitely loud shirts and a selection of ladies clothing. The stokers can usually be relied upon if you are short of female attire and the girlies mess will sort out the makeup. These are essential items for runs ashore, flight deck barbies and sods opera.

I never could work out how so much female clothing could come out of the stokers mess . we had to rely on the contents of the trophy board which were always in a used state anyway and in todays modern navy would probably be considered sexist and a health and safety issue

Most of that female clothing came from Class 1 Rag bundles. When a new one was broached a hunt took place for any usable female clothes. In Boats this was the privilege of the knuckle dragging forendies who had all the best cross dressing attire.
