With the iranian navy seizing RN perosonell in 2007, and the RN standing back while the British couple were kidnapped in Somalia in 2009, the RN seem to have lost their Nelson spirit. Perhaps if they could afford to buy a rowing boat, they could rebuild their reputation by seeing off those pesky bread stealing ducks in Roath Park Lake (although they may fight back).

That's a cracker and must sting because of it's essential truth and because it reflects what a lot of civvies and more than a few brown jobs think about Jolly Jack's recent escapades. McCavity is probably a Pongo as his other Times letters show a good knowledge of artillery support in Afghanistan.

IMO the better quote was:-

“The Government thinks that new ships are more capable and therefore you don’t need so many of them, but the number of escort ships is being cut significantly. If you’re going to rely on new carriers and an amphibious capability ... you need escort ships to keep them safe. The Government is concentrating on the big ships but neglecting the smaller ships.â€

The solution to the problem of insufficient escorts will be solved at a stroke later this year when the 2 carriers are cancelled - simples.

Best concentrate on important stuff like how to woman up the remaining RN subsurface assets, who's joining Raleigh this week and dits from the old an bold about how they sank the Bismarck.
