From the Daily Mail: How the RN forges links with the Merchant Navy

I'm glad this story wound up the Daily Mail, some of its readership and the shadow defence minister as I hate all of the above.

It probably is a bit of a 'jolly', but:
1) No taxpayer money involved.
2) No conflict of interest. The cruise company paid because they thought dialogue between Commander Dunn and their crews would improve the latter's ability to do their jobs. Presumably, no naval secrets were disclosed.
3) He did it in his own holiday in order to better understand his new job.[/QUOTE
]The fare-paying passengers aboard Quest for Adventure paid for the Commander and his new wife through Saga's enhanced tariff.
They occupied a suite ,sat at the Master's table with selected free wines whilst the fare-paying passengers, in guard and steerage, paid for theirs. The flight they "paid" for was a Monarch Charter flight from Gatwick.
The ship sailed at night port to port with little or no opportunity for the man to observe .He, in his red sea rig and his wife sat in the Lounge laughing at the Asian magician they shared their charter flight with.
The scheme is meant to be reciprocal, yet no MN officers or ratings have yet availed themselves of MOD's offer.
So far as passenger ship familiarisation is concerned, it seems this offer appeals just to RN officers.
No rating has yet to be allocated

When we needed to "familiarise" ourselves with the QE2 as the RN counter terrorist team, we visited it in refit in Germany and lived in some festering Kraut barracks...did'nt even get a run ashore in Hamburg. Live in a blue suit Jack..life in a blue suit !!!

And of course if any of us had been offered the 'jolly' we would have turned it down. YES?

Nah - thought not!!!!!

The system is reciprocal and provides for the useful exchange of professional knowledge at the officer level. There are lighter moments, too. I'll never forget having the First Officer of a Cunard liner understudy me as OOW in a frigate. After I had spent 10 minutes taking over the ship from the offgoing OOW, he said:
"Our turnovers are much simpler. I just say 'Two burning, two turning, both swimming pools empty, heading that way.'"
It's meant to be reciprocal but isn't. No MN Officers or ratings have risen to the bait. Only RN Officers have enjoyed luxury passenger vessels .RN ratings have been allocated to Ro Ro's and the Isle of Wight Ferry for their sea-going experience.

What imaginative nonsense!

RN ratings are only ever allocated to sewage disposal lighters, otherwise known as 'honey barges'.

Let's have a look at the last year's figures available from Collingwood.
AB PO CPO RORO 7 Ferry5-- Warrant Officers failed to participate. So far as passenger cruise ships are concerned
Lt Lt.Cmd Cmd Captain 7 benefitted from their sea-going experience.
No MN Officers or ratings rose to the occasion.

Were it so imaginative!

But how many wanted to participate? Perhaps you were the only one that applied but was turned down, so your mlaaring is just sour grapes. Suck it up, Princess!

As an aside, a £2kpp cruise on a Saga ship hardly comes under the heading of Luxury who ever pays for it

SPB - It would have been some time ago if this is any guide:.

I think I received No 8's in place of overalls on Cockade in Korea late 1950.

S43A - Perhaps you served in Korea with Norman, our occasional troll. He and his Jack-based aliases tended to use imaginative 'facts' in their resentful outpourings too.

That reminds me, what does "Lt.Cmd" mean and why the antipathy?

It was interesting to see Cockade mentioned again. Have had a word with an uncle who served on her when David Cobb was the old man He refused outright to wear no 8's They're for the Plumbers in the engine room he would say.

But the Submariner and his newly married heavily-bosomed wife were in a suite upstairs with private steward you can only dream of.
On the charter flight he and his wife were afforded special privileges. If you've travelled Monarch Charter you'll know it's impossible to assume the "brace" position but the submariner and his wife were afforded special 2 seats. Mind you he is rather tall which makes one wonder at the deckhead luxury of modern submarines

Modern submarines have the same headroom as old submarines, tall people learn to duck.

What does his wife's figure have to do with all this?

And you know all this how....?

How wonderful that would be but, sadly, you'll wait in vain.

Today's sailors are so mollycoddled original thought seems to have left some well behind. Mind you syntax would leave some struggling. As an aside Is it amongst or among?
