Flying Aptitude Tests (FATs) - My experience and advice

Hi guys, I was wondering if anyone might be able to answer a couple of questions about the RAF CBAT tests-

1. Spatial Reasoning- the 'INSC' test, is that the one with the attitude indicator, Altimeter, AOB indicator, etc and a pic of an aircraft that you have to match to the correct instrument readings?

2.Symbolic Reasoning- does anyone know where I could find some practice tests for System Logic tests, and what does '3(ANT)' stand for/ what test was that again?

Apologies for all the questions, didn't quite make it for pilot as the symbolic reasoning and spatial ones let me down and was wondering if anyone out there had any advice, exercises, etc.

Thanks a lot :)

Good morning mate,

Reference the first question; there will be a few exercises online, be it even at Private Pilots License standard (I think they still have these tests) - but they're essentially near enough the same thing - I'll see if I can dig out any websites.

Second question, I wouldn't expect anyone to know if there are any websites or question styles formatted in this request as the tests aren't accessible (nor any training type tests) on the Internet.

The only advantage you would have over first time candidates is that you know what to expect, and how to manage your time effectively.

Sorry I can't be of anymore help, maybe someone else can shed some light on anything I may have missed.

Best of luck. I'm hoping to sit my FATS in Feb 2017 (having first sat them in Sep '15 as a WSOp candidate with the RAF)

Hi Nathan, that would be great if you knew of any other spatial reasoning websites! no worries about the symbolic reasoning one. Thanks a lot for the help, I really appreciate it. Yeah I think the symbolic reasoning is more 'problem solving/Numerical' so will have a look around and see if I can dig up some stuff. All the best with FATS.

I saw on a previous thread that somebody recommended turning the joystick the other way round during the ball in the tunnel test? Seems weird that they Would invert the controls? Surely pushing forward moves the ball down and pulling towards yourself moves it upwards?

This thread seems a bit dead now but here I am praying for a reply. Can anyone tell me what happens if you fail the FATs as I've herd there's a massive fail rate.

My understanding; After you have taken them you will be briefed on your score. If you have failed to pass for the role you applied for, they will tell you if you have qualified for a different role which you may consider. If you have failed to pass for any role you can take the FATs again in a years time.

Just wondering why you resurrect a very old thread!!! Are you perhaps related to the 'Messiah'?

But seriously, there are loads of hurdles at which you may fail. For me - the medical held the biggest risk. Most of the rest you can prepare for. The medical, you may be the fittest chap or chapette!! but lingering inside you is some ailment just waiting to foil all your best laid plans!!!
