FIRST SEA LORDS

Good morning All

Today in Navy news Vice Admiral Tony Radakin is to be promoted to First Sea Lord successor to Admiral Sir Philip Jones. I see that Sir Philip Jones was GS. Is there any branch or branches of the service and that see more people in flag rank than others?

Regards

It's a big branch, with lots of command qualified captains who can then move on (1SL, 2SL etc), Logs Admirals may run a close second but you don't need that many Engineer Admirals.

Without looking through any lists, just a guess on my part.

Regardless of starting branch, you have to stand out in a gaggle of similar type and shine throughout your career, there is a reason only a few make it to the top. Also your face has to fit and right job/place at the right time, plus survive all the politics. The type who would rise to CEO if a civy.

Forgot to add, can also help if at least one of your parents or family member is an admiral, or if you marry a future king or queen helps a lot?

Admiral Camilla has a nice ring to it. Might need a haircut though:)

Such a short tenure at the top. You barely get to know the bloke and he beetles off.
