Highly recommend watching this, an excellent documentary I saw on Channel 4 the other night. Dispatches- Fighting the Taleban. Shows the Royal Marines/British Army etc in some heavy fighting. Interesting that some of them are unshaved, rather bad form for an officer to do that! But I spose this is to copy the SAS desert style or to fit in with the locals.

Rumour has it that they grow beards as in the Pathan? culture, facial hair engenders more respect. Therefore the more grizzly you are, the more esteem you are held in. Thus Bumfluff = no respect, Captain pugwash = loadsarespect!

more likely is he has either been there for some months and ran out of razors or he had a hectic week when he was trying not to be shot rather then shaving.

Reminds me of the squaddie who used to write to manufacturers, praising their products in the hope of getting some freebies.
Wrote to Wilkinsons praising their razer blades. Told them that he always used their blades and loved the way that they kept sharp. Explained the blade that ho was currently using was six months old.
Wilkinsons promptly replied thanking him and enclosing a further six months supply................................1 blade.
