War Hero
"Congratulations to the Royal Navy's David Groves, honoured with The Queen's Gallantry Medal by The Duke of Cambridge, for saving the lives of 27 sailors from a burning vessel.

In March 2019 David spent over four hours in towering seas as part of the team aboard HMS Argyll as they rescued every person aboard the stricken container ship Grande America.

The Royal Navy frigate answered a distress call from the Grande America on her way home to Plymouth after nine months away in the Asia-Pacific region.

Speaking on the events of that evening, David said: “One minute you could see a ship on fire, the next it was hidden by a wall of water. And the closer we got, the more engulfed we were in the smoke.”

On his honour, David said: “It is always good to be recognised for the work you do, but at the end of the day this is what we’re trained for. That all kicked in on the night.”"
