FB: Navy News "HMS Ashanti Ghana 50th Anniversary"

"Former members of HMS Ashanti’s ship’s company who served in 1970 under the command of Captain George Bower are invited to take part in commemorations later this year.

The Anglo-Ashanti Memorial Museum, which opens in East Sussex, will showcase 400 years of relations in honour of the 2021 centenary of the Ashanti warrior queen Yaa Asantewaa 1.

HMS Ashanti, which was named after an ethnic group from Ghana, visited Takoradi and Tema in Ghana in August 1970.

As well as a display, the museum is aiming to hold commemorative events in the UK and in Ghana, in conjunction with the Ghana navy and the Ghana Armed Forces Museum in Kumasi.

Former crew members are asked to share their stories and photographs to help mark the 50th anniversary of the tribal-class ship’s visit to Ghana, as well as take part in the commemorations.
