Failed Officer Selection. Any Advice?

#1
Hi All,

Applied for officer and after sitting the recruit test was informed my English Skills in the test wasn't up to standard but my Maths and Mechanical Comprehension was the best out of the group sitting it with 100% in Maths.

I was given the option of resitting the recruit test in 3 months time or enter as a rating. What would you all suggest. In terms of rating roles im torn between Engineering or Warfare branch (Seaman or Warfare Specialist)

Any advice on the current state of these roles would be much appreciated, just a guy looking to make good of his life.

Much Appreciated

No Brainer. Providing your other Ed. Quals match the Officer Application requirements then three months to buff up on the English at Recruit Test level for a re-sit and I become your Uncle.

Cheers Bob for the quick reply, do you know the protocol if i don't succeed in the Officer application further down the line. Will i be able to transfer to a rating horizontally or will i have to reapply.

The only assured route to becoming an Officer is by joining as one, so if that's what you aspire to do, go for the direct route, I'd suggest.

If you have STEM subject A Levels, consider Accelerated Apprentice - £31,100 starting pay (£6k more than Officer starting pay) technical & transferable quals, rapid promotion to leading rate. Degree available if you join as submariner or still feasible but under your own intiative in the Surface Fleet or Fleet Air Arm.

AET, ET(ME) or ET(WE), option three, all offer technical quals. Option four, WS or Sea Spec, doesn't.

By the way, you are best off resitting the test anyway, even if joining as a rating it'll take a few months to join & if you pass for Officer, you can switch back to it prior to joining.

Hi Ninja, Thanks for the reply it really helpful, My A Levels are ICT, Geography A Levels and Maths and Statistics AS Levels. I'm looking for a role that not only has a great deal of hands on but also with qualifications to set myself up for civilian life after i leave. I hear that Sea Spec has MCA accreditation which could lead to captaincy of boats of civilian boats, if this is that case would time steering a boat in the navy count towards a log book in civvy street. Finally my CA at the AFCO told me it would be my 2nd and last time i would be able to take the test, so if took the test again and failed would this bar me from officer roles in the future if i joined as a rating and was selected for officer. (i'm under no illusion that this is extremely rare and not a given) Hope this makes sense, if not don't hesitate to ask for clarification.

Think of it as a blessing in disguise or you dodged a bullett and join as an ET(WESM)
