Welcome to the Navy Net aka Rum Ration

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial RN website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. The security aspects of using Facebook was raised somewhere else on the site (but I cannot remember where) so I thought this link might reassure some RR'ers pondering whether or not to join the RR Facebook group.

  2. that just applies to opening up accounts to web-crawlers supporting the search engines. That is in itself controllable, you don't need to let the crawlers see anything much.

There are broader issues with facebook; the privacy policy is weak, granularity isn't easily controlled and the third party applications generally give little information about what within ones account they're accessing.

to me the biggest issue is the third party apps, to register them you have to tick the checkbox allowing them to access your information and know who you are, yet there is no way of telling what they take and where it goes.

there are privacy issuesas well, but that's by and large up to the individual and applies to most social networking capabilities.
