FAA Warfare ASW Aircrewman Q and A.

4 ASW Aircrewman received their Wings today, all are already serving on the front line Squadrons 820 and 814. Very shortly they will also all be promoted Acting POACMN, once they have completed their leadership courses.

2 of them will catch up with QLNZ with 820 now deployed and those on 814 will be off to Exercise Dynamic Manta Sicily.

I know most aircrewmen will be sent to either Culdrose or Yeovilton upon completion of flying training, but do any ever get sent elsewhere? Or is it strictly on or the other? Also, the understanding I've had is that most direct entry aircrewmen can expect to be sent ASW, whilst Commando aircrewmen seem to mostly come from Royal Marines specialising? Anybody agree with this or have you seen differently? Thanks.

I’m too long away from it all but if your patient “Mark Dip” may be along to give an informed response directly.
Or, try a direct message to him on this forum.
I suspect newbie aircrewman will be pointed at ASW initially. As for air stations!!!! In this shrinking world - who knows. Maybe the crabs will open a few doors as everything seems to going joint servive thesedays.
Good luck.

I can't speak for Junglies, not sure where their other jobs are. ASW wise we have people in the US at NOPF Dam Neck, instructors at RAF Shawbury, RAF Valley, an analyst job at DSTL Portsmouth, one on Reaper at RAF Waddington and from 2020 probably 3 acmn with P8 RAF Lossiemouth. There may be other jobs elsewhere in the future. What I can say is that if you go ASW you will be on 820 or 814 for at least 18 months before you go to any other job location. As for DE going mainly ASW, not sure that is entirely true. Course start dates, manning requirements and aptitude may have a greater influence on which path you take.
Keep the questions coming :)

If you follow RNAS Culdrose on FB there's regular updates on Ex Dynamic Manta. In fact in this clip, there's a DE ASW Aircrewman who is waiting for his course to start. So, I suppose he made it to somewhere other than Culdrose before even starting course ;) and is enjoying 2 weeks in Sicily

@Mark Dip dip Do Aircrewmen get flying pay? I remember hearing about it not long ago, just wanted to check. What can you expect? Is it whilst in training or after? Thanks.

Yes to flying pay, or RRP(F) recruitment and retention pay, flying, if we use the official title. ACMN ASW and Cdo are also on Supp 3 which is on the table below if that helps you understand the complete pay picture. I'm not certain on when you are eligible for RRP(F) so I'll find out the latest. What I can say though is expect to be a Petty Officer(Acting) on Supp 3 with the initial rate of RRP(F) 2 and a half years after joining Raleigh and having completed flying training and joined a front line SQN.

If my sums are right, that works out at £39996.90. The price of a Big Mac £ off of 40k.

;)
