Engineering

Hi,
Some of you may remember a previous post I wrote about what RN Nursing was like. But recently, I have been exploring the various engineering options the military can offer me, specifically in the Navy. Can anyone tell me what life is like as a British military engineer, specifically in the Navy. Thanks in advance.

All branches of the armed forces give excellent engineering training.
The RN has excellent training programs which if followed to completion can result in an engineering degree.
However al engineering training will give civilian recognised qualifications and many civie employers are only too pleased to employ ex service as they know that they are getting a disciplined person

As a matter of interest, what prompted your change of direction?

Engineering is a very gratifying career!
However, there are several variations.
Mechanic - Electrical.
Ship or aircraft. All have their challenges.

On the submarine side Marine Engineering can be hard work as there isn't many of you and the reactor needs a lot of looking after, as they're steam driven boats are heavy on the maintenance.

So what is life generally like for engineers? I haven't completely ruled out nursing I just want to explore the options and engineering looks very attractive.
I won't comment as I am too long out of spannering. It was as I said very rewarding with a but!!
I found the grass was greener elsewhere!
My engineering was aviation based but found it was more financially profitable flying in those magnificent flying machines than fixing them.
Try the search function at the top right of the home page, you may find a wealth of info on aircraft engineering and also mechanical engineering.

Engineering especially at the higher levels needs a good grasp of math
What about maths?

Engineering is both gratifying and frustrating.

It's like a carousel. It's a constant cycle of fix-break-fix-break-fix. But the carousel is on fire.... being attacked by hornets.

It's very easy to become demoralised by the constant repetitiveness of it all, but often enough something interesting will come along to spark the interest up again.

How interesting the roles are when these opportunities come along is entirely based on two things:

1) Your rank
2) How much you're trusted

It's not out of the question for a relatively low ranking engineer to be involved in some higher level management activities these days as long as they're competent.

Maths really isn't that big of a deal anymore within the rating world. You need it for LH and above, but I have never met an engineer who's failed the maths exams.

Feel free to PM with questions if you want to. I'm an AET but I have friends in other branches as well.
