My late Engineer Officer brother told me of 3 ERA to ERA,s he knew of from his old Plymouth State Grammar School. I've forgotten who they were (as if I ever cared) but wonder if such rare events have been recorded.
Probably not ,recalling my experience of Executive Officers disdain for the smelly "Plumbers" "Chief" if they were feeling agreeable. I recall being told the last known ERA to ERA took to wearing a monocle in his advancing years of pomposity.(Ouch!)

Too much for you is it?
Comparisons with the RoyalNavy of the 30's 40's 50's & 60's too much for you to bear (Ouch!)

Explain ERA to ERA, what exactly do you mean?
I think I understand what he means. But it meant me turning off all sense of sanity to get that low.
If it is what I think it is then his post is convoluted and full of personal phlegm.
No change there then.

I did write a reply earlier but then thought - ah sod it!

TBH I know what he means and just wanted confirmation so I can sleep easy when I ignore it.

So far as I know only ERA's aspired to that exalted rank.
No EA's OA or AA's merely ERA's'
Further, so far as I know ,from just one bog standard Grammar School.... in Dopey Devon!!
Engine Room Artificer to Engineer Rear Admiral.
It's the price My Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty had to pay from Sail to Steam. All those dirty finger nails in the Wardroom Tut Tut!! Rolling their ticklers and dropping their bits on the Wardroom carpet--and all the females fancying them.!!!

Shows how much you know then.
To be honest I don' know . How many from the Engineering Lower Deck made it aft and up to Flag Rank and where they were from. I would be interested to know. It is just the three ERA's I know of.

Not sure what branch they were but Fisgard's 8 divisions were named after Tiffy Admirals:
Bennett, Cooke, Griffin, Spikernell (West Side Best Side!).
Lane, Tribe, Frew and Shepherd.

Thank you for that information-Most interesting.
I have looked them all up and without being invidious I thought Walter Frederick lane's most interesting. As an engineer two and a half he was aboard Cossack-the most famous of the British Tribals- when under Philip Vian she navigated the Jossingford in Norway to rescue the Graf Spee prisoners from the German ship Altmark,
Lt Cmd Lane won a DSC for his skill and bravery on that occasion.
It interests me as I was aboard Implacable under Philip Vian when we retraced his and Cossacks steps by sailing up the narrow Fjord. The Implacable was a very large Fleet Carrier but Admiral Vian was well up to the task.

See? You DO have some good dits - so why not spin them instead of coming across as a sad old....... whatever?
Well !Thank you Sir!

Spike Spickernell is another interesting one. He was a Tiffy for a short time in 1939 when war was declared and he was fast tracked to Keyham (HMS Thunderer) from Fisgard. His father was a serving Commander so that , possibly, speeded things up.
However by March 1942 he was doing his bit on HM/SM Statesman in Japanese waters playing all hell with the Japanese navy and others.

^@Supermods - Mmmm

Pray tell - Is this fortgang chappie (having previously declaring himself averse to strap-on licorice legs and the wicked dictatorial tyrants of Whaley) that same one who flounced from the Fleet to throw his loyalty at the feet of a corrupt and dictatorial ordained dictatorship in deepest darkest dismal Africa (where he met up with old ships Phil and both got medalled-up for spinning gash Royal Arthur dits while that poor but v. rich dictator's Independence Day Downtown Dance deteriorated ? )

Or was that an even older and more drug-reliant Norman??

Good question, well asked. I think it may be but I'm not sure.
