Just wondering, what will an EDM actually do? Will it make any difference?

HOUSING PROVISION FOR FORMER MEMBERS OF THE UNITED KINGDOM'S ARMED FORCES

That this House notes the important contribution made by Her Majesty's Armed Forces in defending the United Kingdom's national interests; recognises their commitment and professionalism in the service of the country both at home and abroad; further recognises that following the end of their careers in the armed forces many servicemen and women and their families face considerable difficulties in securing housing appropriate to their needs as civilians; and believes housing associations and the Government should review housing allocation policy in respect of establishing local connections to ensure that former members of the armed forces are not discriminated against when applying for housing.

I believe this issue requires to be pressed further, and it will only be by you and me doing it publically. I received the following from the AFF, as I said they're pushing this issue and others.

I have sent an email to a Minister in the House and await his reply. I shall place it on here when I get it. We know only too well how this government twists and turns when we require answers and action.

When you read the statement below, you will see how the government and its' body of the DCLG is stalling this issue. I have spent two years chasing this issue up, the government has tried everything possible to close doors on me.
The fact I have more support now from the following groups; RBL, BAFF, AFF, Shelter and of course all those users of the E-Goat, Rum Ration, Rear Party, Arrse and the armynet, only re-enforces the importance of getting this legislation changed.

I spoke to the MOD today about various different housing matters that included your issue of ‘local connection’.

MOD are aware of an increase in interest (although this means they spend more time answering MP’s questions and not moving forward – a point they constantly make to me…!) and are working to find a resolution. As I already told you this topic is covered quite regularly (on my prompting) but as you’re also aware it requires a change to primary legislation which is a slow process.

MOD says that they are waiting for a response from DCLG to their questions. The concern is that DCLG will come back with a long list of further questions which will delay things but hopefully there will be an indication of what they’re prepared to do. The really good thing is that it has support from the Services so we just have to keep pushing although I think it will also continue to be frustratingly slow.

I sent the following email to the [email protected] yesterday; This is all with reference to the the above statement by the AFF. The fact is the MoD don't change legislation Ministers do, so by Ministers asking questions will not affect the speed inwhich this issue is being addressed. I believe there has been very little discussion going on between the MoD and the DCLG about the local connection rule for military personnel. I will be going to the House of Commons next week to discuss this issue.

Email sent to FOI

I would like to obtain copies of the actual documents, and copies of correspondence between the departments of the MoD and the DCLG. With reference to housing provisions for service personnel leaving the forces and requiring social housing. This matter covers the Homelessness Legislation local connection rule, which only applies to Her Majesty's Armed Forces.
Any cost for post etc, then please inform me.

An early day motion is currently being signed by MPs which if carried, will help change this legislation, but we need more of them to sign it if we are to get the government to take notice. There are 124 MPs signed up to EDM 288 and 328 signatures on the Petition. We have to keep up the pressure, we require more MPs to signs the EDM, so please email your MP and get them to support our armed forces. The Petition is another avenue through which to show support for our Comrades.

This issue has never been addressed and brought so publicly to the political forefront before. If we wish to achieve our aim, we must continue to put pressure on those political masters.

If the MPs fails to reply to your request, then keep emailing his/her office. All MPs have to reply to written requests, so put pen to paper and write to them. I understand only too well how MPs ignore requests from those they are meant to be serving. I've had two years of it. Keep up the hard work.

The need for more people to sign the petition is great. Those that have neither signed the petition or emailed their M.P are asked to do so. We need to show a united front on this issue and support our serving soldiers and their families.

I received the following letter today from Service Personnel and Policy Service Conditions MoD. I have made contact with the the department and await their return call. In my request under the FOI, I asked for all correspodance the MoD have had with the DCLG on this issue. The letter, as polite as it is, is not the information I asked for. At least the acknowledge there's an issue to be addressed.

The areas spoken about in para 2, under the LSAP, soldiers that use this option are not permitted to rent out their property or sell it for a certain period. the social housing Nomination Scheme is over subscribed and the waiting list are very long, some Housing Associations have removed themselves from the scheme. The government funded schemes, such as the Key Worker initiative. Military personnel have to have at least 5 years left to run on their contract. The other point is, only a very small proportion of serving personnel are eligible for the scheme, ten thousand military personnel. There are more Civil Servants eligible for this scheme, fifty thousand.

Thanks Slim for your support. Many service personnel do, 23 thousand leave each year, but some are priced well out of the market or are unable to get a mortgage due to injury.
