Welcome to the Navy Net aka Rum Ration

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. Thinking about becoming an engineer in RN in a few years,

    mod edit

and i want to know what are the similarites between the the old tiffs corse and the Engineering Tech's course?

Also can you be a Marine Engineering Officer?

  2. Re: Difference between old Tiffs corse and new ET Course

Tifs are no more ETME is the same as MEM etc.

  3. Re: Difference between old Tiffs corse and new ET Course

Yes, see the RN website for details

  4. Re: Difference between old Tiffs corse and new ET Course

I imagine he already knows this. He asked what the difference is between the two courses. Having done neither, I don't feel qualified to comment but I can say that the course is less academically demanding for the ET than for the old Tiff - it is also considerably shorter. I have seen the facilities at Sultan and I can safely say that the ET empire there is currently led by some superb people who are delivering some great training whilst maintaining a good dose of military ethos. It really is very good. Part of the course takes you down a ship for some hands on experience which seems to go down well with all the trainees. Ok - it's different to the tiffs course. BUT the tiff is now dead - so we need to move on. How far you get in the mob is down to you and your abilities coupled with your determination to succeed. The sky is the limit. The mob will give you the tools - you just need to demonstrate that you can use the correctly.

    HTH.

Not strictly true. RN website/AFCO is your best source of advice,

Alright lads, Im just finished raleigh about to got to collingwood as an ETWE. The brief we have been given, points out that the ET course gives recognised qualifications that can be used in good old civvy street, unlike the tiff's course.

Top tip: ask your old man.

".....unlike the tiff's course." Negative Ghost Rider

Mechs (Tiffs) course gave me an OND in Electronic Engineering and an HNC in Engineering.

Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ...
Finished Raleigh as an Art App in April 1985 - at the end of my WEA apprenticeship in May 1989 I had City and Guilds Electrical and Mechanical Engineering (about 8 million hours behind a lathe, milling machine / vice / electric and gas welder / winding my own transformer for my own AVO / etc plus I had an OND and HNC in Electrical and Electronic Engineering. Some WE specialisations even finished with an HND. What the **** do the ETs get? If it was anything better than i got, the mob wouldn't have introduced it. It's got to save money somewhere. BTW Ginger-Bawz, i'm not having a go - just be aware that when the MoD tells you that you're getting a better deal than your predecessors, they're lying. Read the threads about the AFP 75 / 05 rationale if you're really brave...

I assume to be an engineer you first need to know how to spell 'COURSE' [see title of the thread!]

  12. Re: Difference between old Tiffs corse and new ET Course

Youre Right! Thanks for spotting that one - it's my fat fingers on my small keyboard. Never type qucikly and spell the word you want at the same time

  13. As an aside, ETs are not the same as MEMs. ETs are as different from MEMs as they are from tiffs.
A good look at the differences between the various courses would be an interesting exercise.....

  14. OK, similarities: You study marine engineering.

More seriously, tiffs and ETs are moderately different beasts.

Tiffs course used to give you all the engineering foundation at the start of your career, then the training later was specific to the roles you were about to carry out.

ETs course delivers the knowledge and skills as an when you need it over the legnth of the career, ending up with a similar skillset at the end.

    Yes

  15. Re: Difference between old Tiffs corse and new ET Course

Well done, and good luck for the next phase.

Methinks you've been misinformed. Tiff training used to give City & Guilds and HNCs at the end of tiffs course. Recently Portsmouth University have been offering the opportunity to top that up to a BEng or BSc with a fairly minimal amount of effort. ET training now gives a Foundation Degree at the PO level. Foundation degrees are pretty much re-badged HNDs so would need topped up to become proper degrees as well.

  16. I am currently on Let coure at sultan, and the qualifications that are available are the same as tiffs course, it is just that you recieve your foundation degree at the end of POET course, with the option to top up at uni to a full degree.
The tiffs course has basically jst been split in two 1 Year at LH level and 20 Months at PO level.

  17. Re: Difference between old Tiffs corse and new ET Course

Depends on which branch he chooses shippers. The POAET course academic subjects are exactly the same as the old tiffs course, they just seem to be binning the useful stuff (metalwork etc) when the course is shortened.
