Degtree's in Uni for the Marines

Snd?

If thats for me, the Royal Marines Museum is in Eastney Portsmouth, failing that there are loads of good books on the Corps, or subscribe to the Globe and Laurel, the journal of the Royal Marines. Or I think you can watch Repeats of Commando on ITVs website

Whoever told you that Officers are like that must have had a poor experience, from their commanders, I'd hope not to be like that.

Cheers thanks for that. Hoping to join as an officer, so its gd too know that the lads respect the officers, Its from books I have read aswell, that officers are seen as a bit snobby. Obviously they must have bad experiences. I have seen all of the commando series and thinks its brilliant, although very shielded from what actually happens because of the PC people in the world. But still very good.

No, in many ways the troop going through for the programme, who I'm told were known as "Hollywood Troop" at CTC during filming, were given a harder beasting than others.

The preconception of Officers might hark back to the old days, where by the Officers traditionally came from public schools and who your father was really mattered.

Now as long as you meet the academic standards, and the standards set at the AIB your background does not matter.

gd too know. But for someone that hasn't done the commando course, I was speaking to the careers officer and he said a lot of the beasting can't be shown because it wldn't really be allowed because of these PC people around. Personally, If ur going to Afghanistan U shld be prepared for the worst, and if that means testing mental strength with beasting and stress positions, then it's all for gd reason. Ste

Exactly true, if you cannot deal with being yelled at by your Training Staff and being made to do "x" amount of press-ups knowing at the end of it you get to go to bed, how are you going to deal with Iranians kidnapping you in Iraqi waters? And that is exactly why the Marines use Strength of Mind as one of their recruiting lines.

Train Hard, Fight Easy. I believe is the line they use.

A couple of points;

1. Extra or remedial PT is not referred to as beasting. A qualified Careers Adviser would most definitely not refer to it as a beasting, whereas an unqualified individual may view it otherwise.

2. The Royal Marines do not have editorial power over what ITV choose to edit or screen, to the best of my knowledge. The reason for not showing extra drill or PT sessions is more likely due to the fact that it is not very entertaining showing every pace of a three-mile run, or each of 50 individual press-ups, for instance, rather than political correctness.

Ok, It was a royal marine I spoke to, he was doing clerical duties while injured, He did use the phrase beasting, and also said stress positions were used during training. Was he right. It wouldn't surprise me if they did but some people may think its wrong. What do you think

Ste,

It's simply a matter of interpretation. Royal Marines may regard the extra PT as "beastings" however the phrase is most certainly frowned upon. Extra PT is what the Commando Training Centre call additional fitness training serials.

With regard Stress Positions, you will certainly be shown what they are as it is taught in "conduct after capture" & "prisoner handling" serials but, it's certainly not currently used as part of extra PT.
