Deferring entry for ratings

  1. Good morning everyone,

I've just joined this site to ask for help with the following question.

I want to leave my current job and join the Navy as a rating as soon as possible.

However, I would like to do some travelling/backpacking around Asia before I start training.

So my question is, would it be possible once I have been accepted, to defer my entry for, say, 6 months to go travelling, come back and then start training?

I'm going to my AFCO as soon as I can get a day off work and ask them there, but thought I'd ask here if anyone has any experience.

Sorry for the long post and I have looked through the forum for answers to my question, but no such luck.

    Thanks in advance
  2. Hey Keesy

Sometimes I feel like I should have gone travelling for about 6 months before joining. Then again I realise I'll be doing it for a living in a few weeks once finishing phase 2 :) When I got my offer for joining, it was about 2 months till starting date. The dates you get differ in terms of branch and how many want it. I knew a guy that took 13 months to join up as a Seaman Specialist. I think you'll only get a straight answer from the AFCO. Hope that helps :p

It's entirely acceptable to defer your entry date by advising your AFCO you are unavailable to join until after a certain date.

If any element of the selection process expires during the period between passing selection and your provisional entry date, it has to be taken again before you join, so you need to be back in UK at least a couple of months before you actually start training in case you need to have an update interview, renew your security clearance, re-take your PJFT or undergo a further eye test or medical before you enter.

The simple request is to just keep your AFCO informed.
  4. Thanks, thats a big help.
  5. Right guys I've got my AFCO date 26th March.

Anyone know how long it takes on average before I get accepted in, assuming I pass everything first time and all paperwork is in order?

I'm going for ETWE(SM) or ETME (SM).

The expected timescales will be advised during or after you interview, my ball-park guess is, assuming all goes well for you with no undue delays (bearing in mind training stops completely in August), July or September entry for both.
  7. OK I thought I'd ping this to the top instead of starting a new topic.

I do have a few questions about the Submarine Service:

    1) How often does one go on patrols on average? Once a year? Once every 18 months?

    2) How long can these last (ballpark)?

    3) What do you do when not on patrol? Help with repairs/maintenance on a submarine? Go on extra training?

Cheers in advance for any help/advice you can offer.
  8. Some nice questions, i cant answer but would like to know too lol. Bump?
  9. As soon as I get my entry date, I plan to start travelling a little bit, as the waiting time for my trade is apparently 12 - 15 months.

Nice idea, you've inspired me to do something, instead of just boring work in that time. Maybe see you in Asia. lol.
