Deck Officer courses?

Looking to join up as Cadet Deck Officer; I've been doing some looking to see what (if any) courses I get on with the Royal Navy after completing the Cadetship and getting the service contract.
Admittedly I've done some googling but haven't got any solid information so far.

Would be happy to hear what anybody else knows or can point me in the right direction!

From the cadetship side, you will complete all the necessary STCW courses required to attain your CoC (BSSC, First Aid, AFF, MFA, HELM, GMDSS). After that these certificates will need to be renewed at different intervals (mostly 5 years). In terms of additional training that the RFA will give you I am unsure for Deck. I would guess simulator training on land for stuff like Bridge Resource Management. I am only just joining the RFA and coming from cruise ships where we had a week of training every year.

Well that's definitely cleared a lot of things up however I've heard that due to the nature of the RFA and their close relationship some courses are offered from the RN?

HMS Collingwood do a lot of the training from what I understand, whether you get mixed in with the RN I wouldn’t be sure. Maybe search the forum for Collingwood.

Sounds like you're referring to The Specialist Navigation Course & the Principal Warfare Officer (Navigation) Course.

Google "Spec(N)" and "PWO(N)" (pronounced 'pee-woe') and you'll find what you're looking for. Those search results will mostly bring you back to NavyNet but the RN sections of the forum, that's not a mistake, they're the courses you're looking for and are a mix of us & RN.

Can't tell you much more than that tbh as I'm in another branch & only really up on the bridge to resolve finger trouble.

If you join as a deck officer cadet, and then get a contract, you may in the future be able to do the PWO course with the RN, but can you clarify what/why you want to do RN courses?

I just wanted to know what other opportunities I could do while in the RFA; I realize it takes a while to get promotions and to experience all the roles this career has to offer (similar in the Fleet and Silent Service). Those courses give me something more to aim for in a worthwhile career.

Ps. Are there stepping stones to the "SpecN" and "PWO(N)" courses or do we dive straight in at a certain position in your career.
PPS. Also managed to ring up the RFA chaps down at recruiting and the lady there wasn't that helpful.

Absolutely no idea. Not a Deck Officer so my awareness of said courses is all the direction I can give.

Unless the recruiter is a Deck Officer she isn't going to be able to help.

Even if she was a Deck Officer, there's a moral argument that she shouldn't assist you on anything that could give you an edge over other applicants at any stage of the process.

Why don't you Google as I said or use the search function on here to identify relevant threads, read them, then ask your relevant questions in those relevant threads to a relevant audience?

Fair enough, have been lurking for a while but a lot of threads are years old but will check them anyways.

It sounds like you ought to actually join the RN, no?
