Welcome to the Navy Net aka Rum Ration

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial RN website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. Just watching the Channel 4 news, apparantly a new UN report claims that up to 50% of the aid sent to Somalia is being stolen and sold on:
    30% by WFP staff/workers
    10% by the drivers
5-10% by armed gangs/militias (including Islamist ones)
The Somalia government is also accused of selling visas to pirates. So dig deep everyone, only you can help support Islamist fighters and pirates.
  2. Only 50% !

  5. This isn't new, it's always been like it, back in 84 (swing lamp) we were clearing the Red Sea, we had to buy local produce.once during store ship we noticed that all the butter and rice came in big boxes marked " US FAMINE RELIEF NOT FOR RE-SALE"... :?
  6. I'll get a cheque off straight away.
  7. What do you want to buy Finks? :p
  8. This sort of thing makes me sick really.

    Rant on.

This is one of the reasons these countries are F****d and we try to solve by it by pouring in MORE money for them to handle (badly) which, in turn gets distributed as above and then the country is even MORE F****d and even MORE rife with murderers, gangs, and drugs.

    Rant off.

You've pretty much described most British political parties' inner city rejuvenation programmes, designed to eradicate poor housing/homelessness, starvation, urban decay, unemployment, crime (and 'the causes of crime' - sounds familiar?), social disorder, etc... what makes Somalia et al any different?!

  10. Well not a ticket to Mogadishu, been there once and not a bar to be found so that was one time too many.
  11. Damned if you do give, (Because you feel ripped off when reports like this hit the headlines), damned if you don't. (By the likes of that sanctimonious twunt Bob Geldorf.)
Whilst it is certainly galling to see 'wasteage' of donations like this, think how much worse it would be without the bit that gets through to those most in need.
And how many more economic 'refugees' would eventually turn up at Dover.
