Changes to BRNC course

Welcome to the Navy Net aka Rum Ration

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial RN website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. Evening all. After speaking to a few people I was told that there are changes happening to the INT(O) course as of September. Can anyone shed any light to what's happening ?
  2. I heard they were going to reduce the Initial Fleet Time component to a couple of weeks, but I'm not really in the loop so I'd be interested to know too.
  3. My booklet (for September intake) says Initial Fleet Time is 9 weeks, so don't think it is that.
  4. From what I've heard, IFT will only be 4 weeks, as the RN doesn't have enough space on ships to get all YOs on at the same time. I'm a bursar and that's what they told us on our last trip to BRNC. See you in September!
  5. FFS 4 weeks??? A decade ago it was 3 x 13 week terms at BRNC (including 6 weeks IST), 4-5 MONTHs CFT (mine was 18 weeks) then fleetboard, and people told us that we were suffering from doing the bare minimum on a system cut to the bone....

  6. Hang on a second before you decide the whole training system has gone to shit. What else, if anything, did you do before you did your first OOW job? Nowadays, yes IFT is short, but even if it goes down to a month, when you've accounted for the nine month standard Specialist Fleet Time for warfare, I'd say that's a decent amount of sea-time during training in total.
  7. K-S - Fleet Time has re-extended to at least 12 months for sea-going branches to make up for the loss. We are, in effect, back to the pre-CFT/SFT situation.
  8. Slightly off topic, but for those going in in September, how much of the recommended reading have people done? Because I'm looking at the books on Amazon and most of them are £20-30 which me on my post-student loan budget seriously can't afford right now...

PD - try kindle or e-readers as a lot of the books are cheaper, and if you can bring them with you then its easy to have to hand rather than taking up a lot of space.
  10. ?? fleet time?

IFT will be 3 weeks for the foreseeable future, ATG do you mean IFT + branch specific fleet time (SFT)?

  11. no idea what it's called this week - the baby dabber Officers I last spoke to were expecting to do about 12 months between leaving BRNC and going to MWS.

Moves lamp to one side, pulls up a bollard.

In my day when all this was dockyard we did 1 term initial, 1 term Dartmouth Training Ship on deployment and either 1 term (SL Shags) or 2 Terms (GL proper officers) academics. Then to Fleet Time (I was so good they asked me to do another 3 months being a year in total) and if you passed Fleet Board on to OOW course (X2 for me).

Now they have pared it to the bone for cost and lack of seagoing billets. What has not changed for junior seaman/warfare officers is the long period at sea being the 2OOW and learning your trade before professional course.
