Chance of 'Killing People'

Wasn't sure where to post this and my search bar wasn't working so figured Misc was the best bet!

OH says there's zero chance of him killing anyone, since he's joined as an engineer.
Now...I know there isn't much action involved atm...but I'm also PREEEEETTY certain that ZERO chance is a bit of a naive mindset to go in with...I mean...it's an ARMED force. There's at least 1% chance right?!

I'm glad he isn't someone expecting death and war etc...but could someone please give me a realistic view on this from someone who's served a while or family of someone who has?

Thanks!

As an engineer there are some powerful pieces of kit. Could be an accident rather than a war situation but all so easy to kill someone if you dont have your act together.

If your OH is determined to kill someone, In Defence of the Realm, of course, then may I suggest that they join the Army. There is NO glory in being a killer !!!!!!!!!!!!1

What prompted your discussion on this? Is it something which you brought up because you were concerned or is it something your OH mentioned?

From the OP's VC citation: ... armed only with a wheel spanner and clad only in blue ovies and steaming bats, ME Bloggs charged fearlessly at the enemy ..

If your OH has to fire a weapon in anger, something has seriously gone wrong somewhere. On a ship, even at war, his job will be keeping the ship going, whether that’s as damage control, or (if he’s ME) the guy in the engine room or the ship control centre making sure if all is going smoothly (if he’s WE) making sure the communications or radar and weapons systems are still working. The people firing the bang sticks will be the Warfare branch.
In harbour the duty engineers will be doing engineer type things while onwatch (conducting rounds of their spaces to make sure nothing has spontaneously burst in to flames or started flooding mainly) while the Warfare (or incase of the carriers, the air department) will be the ones doing gangway sentry.

Strange you say that!!!!
I was privilaged to have read the memoirs of an ex CPO Stoker. (WW2 ere). He lived round the corner from on Fraggle.
He worked with or for the OSS, I forgot, it was a while ago i read it. Anyway, he used to escort agents into occupied France and wrote very eloquently of the methods of silent killing!!!
He was awarded the French eqivilent of our VC for his trouble. He was no James Bond but his story would have made a good film.
Back to my slumbers now!

Back in the 70's, I was a reservist greenie, but was nevertheless trained for boarding party duties and gangway sentry. Those are about the only circumstances I can think of where an engineer might find himself killing someone outside of committing a negligent act involving his engineering job.

You could of course argue that anyone onboard a ship or Submarine would be involved in the killing of others during the course of enemy actions.

Happy now. Only took another four posts......
Well it had to be said.
In all honesty though I reckon Navy chefs are some of the finest chefs around. In my time I was fed by the chefs some absolute fantastic food and thetimes when it was rubbish were very few and far between.
Pleased I am not in now on an airstation being fed by the new system. Bet everyone wishes that their Navy chefs werre back in the galleys
