I remember him being in the news when he was doing rubber-deck trials involving wheels-up landings in a Vampire on board HMS (?)Warrior. The problem of how to jack the a/c up and move it out of the way seemed not to have been anticipated! In modern times as it were I've seen him on TV on a few occasions being interviewed, always very dry and very modest.
Had the Brits not sold out, then this would have been the man that broke the sound barrier first.
