Can't get bank account due to marker. Is this a bar to entry?

Hi all,

I have been unable to get a bank account due to a fraud marker against my name. Long story short I trusted the wrong person and its gone against me so I can't get a bank account for another 5 year's. I currently have my wages paid into an account in my mums name which only I use and have a debit card for. I do have an online account called revolt and a debit card for it but not sure if I can 100% trust it but have used it to pay for things. Will I be able to use the account in my mums name? Or will they refuse entry because of this?

I would very much doubt that you can use Mum's account, one of the conditions of having an account is that you don't let others know passwords etc. Go and see your local bank branch and fully explain the circumstances they may let you have a restricted account of some sort. (I am aware that everyone uses other peoples accounts, that doesn't make it legal)

Hey mate,

I'm in the Army Reserve but for the most part I assume JPA is all the same across the three forces? I'll break it down:

First: When filling out the enlistment paperwork there was a section for bank details. The guidance states that the account MUST be in your name (it can be a sole account or a joint account but it must be in your name).

Second: The enlistment paperwork provides for you to enter account name; bank; sort-code and account number. Revolut provide this for the GBP account as well as the typical IBAN and BIC number for the EUR account.

Third: I would advise not using Revolut for your day to day banking. Sometimes there will be downtime and little blips with service and it's more likely than with a more established (UK) bank. You also need to consider the limits that Revolut put in place on accounts. You may find your pay and other credits quickly surpassing these. If they stop your account temporarily then you are phucked until they unblock it.

There are loads of basic accounts with high street banks, you can also consider Monzo who are quite decent :)

Forth: What kind of marker is this? If it's CIFAS identity protection that's not an issue. All it does is flag to lenders that you are more suspectible to identity fraud and that they should carry out further checks to make sure you are who you say you are.

It's to protect you more than anything.

Good luck!

Hi there, it's a CIFAS marker to say I was an accessory to fraud. It wasn't intentional but came across that way to the bank. In terms of monzo and basic accounts. I've tried all this and get rejected.

Have you tried Barclays? They have a basic account for people who have been made bankrupt...

No, not me, but may be worth a try.

This appears serious to me. While not necessarily a bar to entry, it may well have an adverse effect on SC. You would have to disclose all the related information to the appropriate authorities or risk having an SC refused or revoked for non-disclosure if you didn't.

Have you tried providing the financial institution that put the marker on your report with a detailed explanation of what happened and why?

This is something you may need some assistance to resolve; I would suggest going to your local Citizens' Advice Bureau to begin with as this may be a route to getting free legal advice through the charity Advocate.

Monzo? Near anag. for those with "No Monz"...

Whilst Trustpilot rates it 'Excellent' this doesn't figure when 13% of reviews were Bad, in particular fistfuls of recent horror stories from quite a few angry punters left high & dry with their accounts inexplicably frozen:

Looks like I've managed to get myself a monzo account. Is this acceptable for HM forces?

Top man! You'll be absolutely fine with Monzo (for everything). I don't know the specifics of that situation re: fraud but please try and keep yourself out of trouble moving forward.

This is probably one of the last shots you have at doing it over properly now.
