Can I / Should I change the position I applied for?

Welcome to the Navy Net aka Rum Ration

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial RN website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. Hi
I've applied for the navy and my first 2 choices are:
    1.Engineering technicican- weapons engineer
    2.Engineering technician weapons engineer submariner.

However now i'm thinking maybe i should of applied as warfare specialist AWW. I think I'd enjoy that, as much as ETWE, and the wait is 3 months ive heard, rather than 8.
How do i change choice, tell them at interview, phone the afco??
Also would it look bad,do many people change their minds after applying?

    any advise appreciated.

    Hi Alex,

You really must be 100% certain you wish to join as WS rather than ET(WE), the latter has technical training the former doesn't. Under no circumstances opt for a different job because of waiting times. The jobs are VERY different. Once you join, you cannot change branches, regardless of the anecdotal tales of others- you even have to sign an understanding to that effect when you join.

Generally speaking your AFCO will guide you toward the job best suited to you, given your interests & of course your Recruiting Test (RT)score.

Whilst you haven't joined. you must consider the transferable skills available to you, plus the fact the RT score indicates which jobs will challenge & stimulate you.

Ultimately it's your choice & your AFCO will probably accept your change of mind if that's what you want. But instead of maintaining the equipment as ET(WE), a WS operates the equipment in broad terms.

My advice? Hold out for the job you wanted BEFORE you learned of the waiting times or you may regret it.

Best of luck in your choice
  3. What's a soild RT score at your office for those wanting to go down the Pilot/Observer route?

  4. While I respect your invalueable wisdom Ninja, does that mean you cannot change branches to "Crusher" as in the past???

The RT score for all Officers is identical, so all those educationally qualified that pass with sufficiently high marks in Literacy & Numeracy have an equal chance at that stage of selection. The Officer RT hasn't been running long enough to establish which scores are more likely to pass Aircrew selection, but I'd guess significantly higher scores in Reasoning would indicate a higher pass percentage. the odd thing at the moment is people applying for Communications Technician [CT] (rating entry) may score too low for that specialisation in Reasoning, but may be eligible for Officer on the maths/English scores if academically qualified.

After completing FATS, the pyschometric tests at AIB, as mentioned on the condensed AIB thread, are significantly stiffer.

Only if you are recommended & can get manning clearance. Shortage category branches (currently WS, all SM trades, Chefs, CIS, Stewards, AETs, etc.,) have little or no chance.

Sideways entry branches: PTI & Service Police are the only permissible branch transfers, subject to manning clearance.

Do that and I give you two years before you are kicking yourself up and down all day long!

  8. Listen to your Uncle Lammers, you know he makes sense :thumright:
  9. Thanks for the info Ninja :thumright:
  10. Read ALL the forums here and you will soon find out that we wafu's tend to have the most fun, enjoy life, lots of time off, a great sea/shore ratio, (well it was in my day), and lots of very good technical training.

How do we know this, because we get slagged off the most........ jealosy!
  11. Ok, thanks.

I guess it's just one of those things that either comes naturally or doesen't come at all.
  12. I've never had to 'apply', I just tell her it's her turn on top and away we go.
  13. And of course Photographer, Helo controller and Air Crew (and even a few Clearance Divers)

  14. That cleared up a few things for me. Cheers SM
